In vitro antimicrobial activity of extracts and isolated constituents of Rubus ulmifolius

L. Panizzi; C Caponi; Serena Catalano; P. L. Cioni; Ivano Morelli

The antimicrobial activity on bacteria and fungi of increasing polarity extracts of Rubus ulmifolius and that of some isolated constituents, quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucuronide; kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-glucuronide, gallic acid, ferulic acid and tiliroside was evaluated. The phenolic and tannins fractions showed an high antimicrobial activity.

In vitro antimicrobial activity of extracts and isolated constituents of Geum rivale.

L. Panizzi; Serena Catalano; C. Miarelli; P. L. Cioni; Elisabetta Campeol

The antimicrobial activity of extracts of Geum rivale (Rosaceae) and that of some isolated constituents, on bacteria and fungi, was evaluated. The activity was concentrated in the triterpenes fraction and, for gram+ and gram− bacteria, also in the flavonoids fraction. Copyright

A xanthone from Senecio mikanioides leaves

Serena Catalano; Stefano Luschi; Guido Flamini; Pier Luigi Cioni; Elisa Nieri; Ivano Morelli

Abstract A new p -hydroxybenzoylated xanthone, [ 2-(2′-O-p- hydroxybenzoyl) -C-β- d -glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone ], muraxanthone, and four known xanthones have been isolated from the leaves of Senecio mikanioides . The structure of the new compound has been defined by means of FAB-mass spectrometry and a combination of homo- and hetero-nuclear one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques.

Three anthrones from Rubus ulmifolius

Guido Flamini; Serena Catalano; Chiara Caponi; L. Panizzi; Ivano Morelli

From the aerial parts of Rubus ulmifolius Schott three new anthrones, rubanthrone A, B and C, have been isolated. Their structures were established by spectral procedures including 1D and 2D NMR techniques and chemical derivatization. Rubanthrone A showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at 4.5 mg/ml.

Iridoids from Mentzelia cordifolia

Serena Catalano; Guido Flamini; Anna Rita Bilia; Ivano Morelli; Marcello Nicoletti

Abstract From the aerial parts of Mentzelia cordifolia , 11 known compounds, seven phenolics and four iridoids have been identified. In addition, two new iridoids, i.e. mentzefoliol and glucosylmentzefoliol, have been isolated and characterized. Their structures have been elucidated mainly by means of spectroscopic data.

(η6-Naphthalene)(η4-cycloocta-1,5-diene)ruthenium(0) as efficient catalytic precursor for the isomerization of methyl linoleate under mild conditions

Paolo Pertici; Valter Ballantini; Serena Catalano; Anna Giuntoli; Corrado Malanga; Giovanni Vitulli

Abstract The Ru(η6-naphthalene)(η4-cycloocta-1,5-diene) complex, 1, in the presence of acetonitrile, is able to promote the isomerization of methyl linoleate under mild conditions (60°C) with high yields. Using aprotic solvents (hexane) the reaction is very selective, by-products like methyl oleates and polymers are formed in negligible amounts. A remarkable long-lived catalytic activity has been observed.

Flavonoids from Pyracantha coccinea roots

Anna Rita Bilia; Serena Catalano; Luisa Pistelli; Ivano Morelli

Abstract From the roots of Pyracantha coccinea 10 known flavonoids have been isolated. In addition, three new compounds: aromadendrin 5-methyl ether, pinostrobin 5-glucoside, and norwogonin 5-glucoside, have been characterized. The flavonoid patterns were compared in leaves, bark, flowers and fruits.

Chemical investigation of Polylepis incana (Rosaceae)

Serena Catalano; P. L. Cioni; M. Martinozzi; V. De Feo; Ivano Morelli

Abstract Triterpenes and flavonoids isolated from Polylepis incana confirm the correct systematic position of the species in the tribe Sanguisorbeae (Rosoideae).

Kaempferol 3-O-β-d-(6″-feruloylglucoside) fromPolylepis incana

Serena Catalano; Anna Rita Bilia; M. Martinozzi; Ivano Morelli

Abstract A new acyl glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-β- d -(6″-feruloylglucoside), was isolated from the leaves ofPolylepis incana. The structure was de

Antimicrobial activity of extracts of Mutisia acuminata var. acuminata.

Serena Catalano; P. L. Cioni; L. Panizzi; Ivano Morelli

The biological activity of methanol and water extracts of Mutisia acuminata Ruiz et Pavon var. acuminata (Asteraceae) against bacteria and fungi (spores and mycelia) was evaluated. The role of pH of the medium in antimicrobial activity was investigated.
