Associations between self-perceived quality of life and socio-demographic, psychosocial, and health variables in a group of elderly

The objectives of this study were to investigate: (a) multiple relations between socio-demographic, psychosocial, and health variables and quality of life in the elderly and (b) the models validity through correlation with depressive symptoms. The sample included 339 elderly individuals from 60 to 98 years of age (M = 73.4; SD = 8.3), who answered a socio-demographic questionnaire, WHOQOL-100, and BDI. Cluster analysis of the sample distributed the elders into two groups according to self-perceived quality of life (better versus worse), and logistic regression analysis identified variables that explained better quality of life. Social class, self-rated health status, volunteer work, use of medication, and data collection setting were associated with quality of life (predictive capacity for correct classification 72.3%, specificity 73.6%, and sensitivity 71.1%). The inverse correlation between the models variables and BDI scores provided evidence of the models validity. The model can help support public policies aimed at promoting quality of life in the elderly.Os objetivos do estudo foram: (a) investigar relacoes multiplas entre variaveis sociodemograficas, psicossociais e de saude sobre a qualidade de vida em idosos; e (b) investigar a validade do modelo pela correlacao com sintomatologia depressiva. Participaram 339 idosos com idades entre 60 e 98 anos (M = 73,4; DP = 8,3), os quais responderam a um questionario sociodemografico, ao WHOQOL-100 e ao BDI. Pela analise de conglomerados os idosos foram distribuidos em dois grupos, conforme a percepcao de qualidade de vida (melhor e pior) e, por meio de uma analise de regressao logistica, verificou-se as variaveis que explicaram a melhor percepcao de qualidade de vida. As variaveis classe social, percepcao do estado de saude, trabalho voluntario, uso de medicacao e contexto de coleta se associaram a qualidade de vida (a capacidade preditiva de classificacao correta foi de 72,3%, especificidade de 73,6% e sensibilidade de 71,1%). A correlacao inversa das variaveis do modelo com os escores do BDI indicou evidencias de validade do modelo. O modelo aqui encontrado pode fomentar politicas publicas que visem a promocao da qualidade de vida de idosos.

Centro de Avaliação Psicológica - CAP: uma clínica-escola especializada em avaliação e diagnóstico psicológico

A demanda por uma formacao profissional com qualidade fomentou o desenvolvimento do Centro de Avaliacao Psicologica (CAP) do Instituto de Psicologia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). O CAP e uma clinica-escola especializada em avaliacao e diagnostico psicologicos. O presente relato de experiencia tem como objetivo apresentar os trabalhos desenvolvidos no CAP, bem como os metodos e praticas empregados no servico. Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC): estudos preliminares da adaptação e validação para a cultura brasileira

ER assesses the expression of emotions, empathy, and emotional self-awareness, while L/N assesses the lack of fl exibility, anger dysregulation, and mood lability. The aim of this study is to perform the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the ERC and investigate evidence of the validity of its Brazilian version. Two studies are conducted: Study I – Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of ERC for use in Brazil; and Study II – Investigation of evidence of the validity of the ERC. The sample includes 561 informants (parents and teachers) on children aged 3-12 years old. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) assumptions are adequate, and the two-factor solution (ER and L/N) is shown to be the most adequate, explaining 57% of the variance (L/N α = .77 and ER α = .73). Subscale L/N is positively correlated with measurements of behavioral problems, while subscale ER is positively correlated with measurements of social skills. The present study provides the fi rst evidence of the validity of the ERC for use in the Brazilian context.

Desenvolvimento sociocognitivo da teoria da mente: estudos interventivos com crianças de 3 e 4 anos

The aim of the research was to investigate the efficacy of interventional procedures, with emphasis on the acquisition of mental verbs and on the practice of attributing mental states on the development of theory of mind in children aged 3 and 4 years old. 102 children participated in this research and were divided into three different studies. The first study aimed to assess the adequacy of the proposed interventions, the second study investigated the effect of interventions and the third study evaluated the effectiveness of the training of three adults in the application of evaluative and interventional procedures. The results generally showed that the interventional procedures had a positive effect on the development of theory of mind in young children. The emphasis on mental verbs seems to have no significant effect. Training people in application of evaluative and interventional procedures proved to be efficient. Technical aspects in the use of interventional and evaluative techniques presented peculiarities with regard to the material and language used.
