This article discusses about Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) results for Brazilian Economy in the period from 1968 to 1994. The main question is the relationship between the relevant economic facts in this period and results obtained in the time series tests of PPP. We argue that the several changes in the macroeconomic conditions, and in the political economy of the period was translated in changes of the stochastic properties of the real exchange rates time series measures, and your component series. Specifically, we are interested in analyze the impact of structural breaks on the absolute version test for PPP in a group of studies selected, and compare with new results for multiple break unit root tests presented here.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the hysteresis hypothesis for the price and quantity of Brazilian imports in recent years. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical measure of strong macro hysteresis, as developed by Piscitelli et al., was incorporated into import demand and pass-through panel cointegration equations. Findings – The results show that the number of sectors that do not reject hysteresis is larger for the import price than for the demand for imported goods. The evidence supports Dixits idea that the presence of hysteresis should diminish the degree of pass-through. Correcting for hysteresis makes quantity and price of imports more sensitive to exchange rate variations. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the literature by introducing Piscitelli et al.s measure to test the hysteresis hypothesis in import prices and quantity.

This study tests for macro?hysteresis in Brazilian exports of manufactured products using a panel model with threshold parameters according to Hansen. To test hysteresis, the threshold variables are built based on studies by Parslei and Wei, and Penkova. There is evidence of asymmetrical responses, with more pronounced increases in the price elasticity of demand during periods of high depreciation of the exchange rate compared with periods of more pronounced currency appreciation. We also estimate the relative price intervals that correspond to the inaction band.

The study works with the perspective of investigating the influence of postdoctoral studies on scientific production and, more specifically, compares the collective academic performance of researchers who have opted to realize a postdoctoral research with those who have not done so along their careers. The training is an extra item in the academic career, acting as a knowledge-updating and upgrading process through socialization and contact with mainstream science. This paper constitutes an exploratory study circumscribed by the broad fields of biological, engineering, exact and geosciences, and health. With a population of 86 doctors (PhDs) who completed postdoctoral research before June 2005 and a sample of 198 professors with and without postdoctoral work, and working in graduate programs at USP in Brazil, the results point out differences and a positive influence of the postdoctoral research, especially when a longer time span has elapsed since the conclusion of the doctor’s degree. Among professors with postdoctoral research realized there is a trend for increased production, but it is not a strong and incisive one; even when considering a longer period of time after obtaining the doctoral degree, various cases of professors with similar performances were observed, independently of the realization of postdoctoral studies.

This paper estimates the impact of vessels turnaround time on Brazilian exports. To achieve this goal, we use a difference gravity equationxa0in order to explore the time variation in port procedures for 16 Brazilian ports. This paper uses a unique database with local exports, taking into account the port used and products aggregated at the four‐digit Harmonized System (HS) level for the period between 2010 and 2012. The estimation results indicate that, in general, each additional hour of delay in port procedures represents costs to Brazilian exporters, which may lead to loss of competitiveness of domestic products abroad. According to the estimates, each additional relative hour of delay in the average port is equivalent to a reduction in relative local exports of ~2%. Moreover, a 10% relative reduction in vessel turnaround time can increase the proportional number of exported product categories by 1%. Therefore, our findings suggest that turnaround time has a statistically significant effect on the intensive and extensive margins of international trade.

Venture capital is an important source of fundraising for technology based-firms by providing temporary financial and management support in exchanges for equity. In Brazil, the venture capital market is under explored compared to mature ecosystems, resulting in restriction of risk investments. The contribution of this research is the better understanding of the difficulties of the relation between venture capital managers and entrepreneurs of biotech companies in Brazil. This can help to improve the relationship between these ones and, consequently, to benefit the future development of the biotech sector in habitats like the one studied. The method includes a collection of primary data through interviews with venture capital managers. It was concluded that the difficulties are present in the venture capital activities of fundraising and investments, that are influenced by the limited culture of venture capital investments in Brazil and the economic variables, as the interest rate, by its impact in the investors cost of capital. Also, was identified that, among several criteria investigated, the team characteristics was the one of greater value for most of the venture capital fund managers analyzed.

The objectives of this work are to check the international trade relations of the top 20 countries that sell products related to the production of wind energy and which are the main products in international trade in this sector. The motivation for the analysis of this energy matrix stems from the need of more consistent public policies for production, because the logistics necessary to reach the end consumer, as this energy source needs to be installed in places with good intensity winds, and later transported to the consumer market. Initially they selected 23 products that make up the equipment for building towers and the production and processing of wind energy. Using the data in COMTRADE, it was the countries that sell the products chosen in order to establish the main countries. Later, he collected the data from 2006 to 2015, from the HS codes. Secondly the export data of the 23 products were grouped to check the major global players in the sale and purchase of these products then added to the annual sales of each country for each product in order to see which are prevalent in each country. Data were analyzed using the Social Network Analysis (SNA) with the aid of Gephi software. For graphical presentation of the data is used dynamic networks that allow the visualization of the change in exports over the period studied. It is observed that trade relations between the US, Canada and Mexico are the most expressive of the network, but you must also highlight Japan, Germany and France and in recent years the strengthening of Denmark in this market. Four products stand out, which say about the wind turbine blades and towers; consoles for a voltage not exceeding 1000V, instrument control for automatic adjustment and gear boxes and other speed.

With the purpose of evaluating recent advances in innovation policy in Brazil, this article proposes to characterize firms with financial constraints to innovate. The characteristics of financially constrained firms are compared between the three-year periods before and after the implementation of the main instruments for financing innovation in Brazil. This work also considers whether firms that obtain public funding for innovation suffer from financial constraints. An assessment is made of the criteria for granting public funding for innovation. The 2005 and 2008 editions of PINTEC were used for estimation of complementary log-log models and instrumental variables.

The article aims to assess the impact on the scientific productivity of academic researchers involved in research projects funded by the Sector Funds. We gathered data on the performance of Brazilian researchers, and their relationships with Sector Funds for the period 2000 to 2008, from databases Lattes CNPq and funding base of Sector Funds, provided by MCT. Evidence obtained shows an overall positive impact on the scientific productivity of researchers in the sample. The global impact of financing policy for Sector Funds must have led to an increase of 5% to 6% in the studies of academic researchers over the period. Additionally, the estimation of the Brazilian´s researchers life cycle found that the peak of scientific output of a researcher presenting at around 57 years old.

Several studies have been conducted to analyze the impacts of technological innovation on the trade performance of enterprises. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the percentage of sales revenue derived from new products in Sao Paulo State industry. This is a descriptive and explanatory research that uses a quantitative approach. It used secondary data from the PAEP, Survey of Economic Activity in the State of Sao Paulo, which was conducted by SEADE (State Data Analysis System foundation). The results obtained show that the factors that influence new product revenue are: controlling shareholder nationality, being part of an entrepreneurial group, the number of people involved in research and development, the number of employees working directly in manufacturing operations, information sources for innovation activities, and the government support for technological innovation.
