Early weaning and concentrate supplementation on the performance and metabolic profile of grazing lambs

This study was designed to investigate the effect of early weaning and concentrate supplementation on performance and metabolic profile of lambs in four production systems on pasture: suckling lambs not supplemented until slaughter; suckling lambs supplemented with concentrate in creep feeding until slaughter; early weaned lambs not supplemented until slaughter; early weaned lambs supplemented with concentrate until slaughter. Performance was assessed by average daily gain (ADG) and body condition score (BCS) measurements. Metabolic profile was delineated by measuring serum albumin, urea, creatinine, cholesterol, glucose and aspartate aminotransferase. Weaning reduced ADG by 92 g/d and the ADG for weaned and suckling lambs were 113 g/d and 205 g/d, respectively. Supplementation increased ADG by 117 g/d and the ADG was 99 g/d for non-supplemented and 216 g/d for supplemented lambs. Body weight and BCS at the end of trial were lower in weaned and non-supplemented animals (20.7 kg and 1.5 points), and higher in those on creep feeding (35.3 kg and 3.3 points). Weaning decreased serum levels of albumin, cholesterol and aspartate aminotransferase. Supplementation increased serum albumin and decreased serum aspartate aminotransferase. Serum urea was not affected by weaning or supplementation and remained high during the trial. Serum creatinine and glucose were lower in weaned and non-supplemented lambs. Early weaning generates unsuitable metabolic profile and low performance and may not be recommended as single strategy to produce lambs on pasture. Concentrate supplementation has similar response to suckling on the performance and metabolic profile of animals, and may be considered an efficient strategy to improve the nutritional status of early weaned lambs.

Electronic and visual identification devices for adult goats reared in semi-intensive system

This study intended to evaluate three identification devices for adult goats reared in semi-intensive system. They were (1) the ruminal bolus, electronic identification device composed of non-toxic ceramic and weighing 74.4 g; (2) small ear tag on left ear, visual identification device with dimensions of 50 × 15mm; and (3) big ear tag on right ear, also a visual identification device with dimensions of 42 × 48 mm. Twenty-two crossbred Boer female goats with mean age of 4 years and mean body weight (BW) of 52.6 kg were used. The identification devices were applied on all animals. Time spent for administration/application, readability and retention rate of devices were assessed. Problems during and after the application of devices, as well as device losses were recorded. Evaluations were performed one day and one week after application, then, monthly, for six months. The time spent for administration/application of the devices showed mean of 21 s and was similar between the evaluated devices. One big ear tag was lost, which decreased the retention rate of this device to 95.5%. The other devices showed retention rate of 100%. The readability was 100% for all studied devices. Small ear tags and ruminal boluses used in this study are recommended for adult goats. Production systems, environment, and ear tags with large dimensions may affect the retention rates of these visual identification devices.

Residual feed intake and reproductive traits of growing Purunã bulls

Residual feed intake (RFI) and its relationship with reproductive traits was evaluated in growing bulls. Fifty-two growing Purunã bulls (11 mo initial age) were fed ad libitum in individual feedlot pens for 112 d. The animals were ranked for RFI and assigned to 3 feed efficiency groups: efficient (low RFI), intermediate (medium RFI), and inefficient (high RFI). Initial and final BW and ADG did not differ ( > 0.10) among the efficiency groups and were mean values of 254.6 (SD 44), 373.0 (SD 62), and 1.06 kg (SD 0.25), respectively. Mean values of 7.12 ± 0.28, 7.78 ± 0.28, and 8.04 ± 0.28 kg/d for DMI and -0.38 ± 0.04, -0.02 ± 0.04, and 0.51 ± 0.04 kg of DM/d for RFI were observed in the efficient, intermediate, and inefficient groups, respectively. Crude protein and ME intake were strongly correlated ( = 0.74, < 0.001 for both variables) with RFI and were lower ( < 0.10) in the efficient group (13.6 ± 0.2 g DM/kg BW∙d and 0.252 ± 0.003 Mcal/kg BW∙d, respectively) and greater ( < 0.10) in the inefficient group (15.3 ± 0.2 g DM/kg BW∙d and 0.282 ± 0.003 Mcal/kg BW∙d, respectively). Testicular measures (width, length, volume, ultrasonogram pixel intensity, and scrotum perimeter) and serum testosterone were not correlated with RFI ( > 0.10) but showed moderate to strong correlations with initial BW ( ranged from 0.36 to 0.51, ≤ 0.01), final BW ( ranged from 0.36 to 0.64, ≤ 0.01), and ADG ( ranged from 0.29 to 0.53, < 0.05). All the reproductive traits (testicular measurements and concentrations of serum testosterone) showed similar values among the efficiency groups. During the growth phase, feed intake and protein and energy requirements were decreased in more efficient bulls in terms of RFI. However, both groups maintained similar BW and ADG. Regardless of their RFI classification, Purunã bulls had the same reproductive traits during the growth phase.

Performance, carcass traits and costs of Suffolk lambs finishing systems with early weaning and controlled suckling

The performance, carcass traits and finishing costs of Suffolk lambs were evaluated in three systems: (1) lambs weaned with 22 kg of body weight (BW) and supplemented with concentrate on pasture until slaughter; (2) lambs weaned with 22 kg BW and fed in feedlot until slaughter; (3) lambs maintained in controlled nursing after 22 kg BW and creep fed in feedlot until slaughter . Average daily gain (ADG) was 224 g/d for lambs weaned and supplemented with concentrate on pasture, 386 g/d for lambs weaned in feedlot and 481 g/d for lambs under controlled nursing. Empty body weight and visceral fat deposition were highest in lambs from feedlot systems. Carcass weights and carcass yields were highest for lambs in controlled nursing. Finishing total costs were highest in controlled nursing and lowest in the system with weaning in feedlot. High concentrate diet associated with controlled nursing in feedlot allowed lambs to reach the growth potential and carcasses with higher weights, higher yields and higher fat content. After weaning, lambs in feedlot fed with high concentrate diet had higher weight gain than lambs supplemented with concentrate on pasture. Carcasses produced under these two systems presented the same characteristics. The system with weaning in feedlot showed the lowest cost per kg carcass.

Características de desempenho e eficiência alimentar de touros Purunã em crescimento de três classes de consumo alimentar residual

This trial aimed to evaluate the performance, feed intake and feed efficiency traits of Puruna growing bulls of three groups of residual feed intake (RFI): efficient, intermediary and inefficient. There were used 110 growing bulls with average of 10 months of age and 233kg of body weight (BW) which were randomly allocated in individual feedlot pens. The diet was composed, in dry matter (DM) basis, by 420g/kg of concentrate and 580g/kg of corn silage, and was offered ad libitum. Daily dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were assessed during 112 days. Initial and final BW and ADG not differed between the efficiency groups and showed mean values of 233kg, 360kg and 1.14kg/d. Mean values of 7.19, 7.62 and 8.10kg/d to DMI and -0.48, -0.01 and 0.48kg DM/d to RFI were observed in efficient, intermediary and inefficient groups. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) and gross feed efficiency (GFE) not differed between efficient and intermediary groups, which showed means of 6.65kg DM/kg gain and 153g gain/kg DM. Inefficient group showed higher FCR and lower GFE, with mean values of 7.40kg DM/kg gain and 138g gain/kg DM. Partial efficiency of growth (PEG) differed between the efficiency groups and showed means of 294, 277 and 255g gain/kg DM for growth in efficient, intermediary and inefficient groups. RFI showed moderate to high correlations with FCR, GFE and PEG, and decrease of RFI resulted in decrease of FCR in 12.2%, increase of GFE in 13.3% and increase of PEG in 15.5%. Efficient Puruna growing bulls (low RFI) present lower feed intake, but maintains the same production level that inefficient ones (high RFI). Thus, RFI classification allows identifying animals with potential to improve the productive efficiency of herd.

Carcass and meat traits, and non-carcass components of lambs fed ration containing increasing levels of urea

The objective of this study was to evaluate the carcass and meat traits, and the non-carcass components of crossbred Dorper lambs fed diets with increasing levels of urea (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% of dry matter – DM). The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments (urea inclusion levels) and six replicates per treatment. Lambs were fed ad libitum for 56 days and slaughtered at 37.9 ± 5.1 kg of body weight (BW). The weight and yield of carcass before and after cooling were not influenced by urea levels, with average values of 16.9 kg and 44.6% for cold carcass weight and yield. Urea levels did not affect the morphometric measurements, the fat deposition on the carcass, the weight of carcass cuts and the weight of non-carcass components. There was a quadratic effect of urea levels on the loin yield, which may achieve maximum value of 11.31% with the inclusion of 0.84% DM urea in the feed. The pH and the color coordinates L* (brightness), a* (red intensity) and C* (saturation) of the meat also showed quadratic response to the urea levels, where in the minimum value of 5.53 for pH, maximum value of 48.67 for L* and minimum values of 14.04 and 16.21 for a* and C* may be obtained by including 0.53 to 0.70% DM urea in the ration. The inclusion of 0.84% DM urea in the ration is recommended to obtain maximum yield of loin and meat with attractive characteristics to the consumer, which is characterized by high red intensity and brightness. If consumers have preference for lamb meat with a more intense red color, the inclusion of 1.5% DM urea should be considered in the ration formulation.

Early weaning and concentrate supplementation strategies for lamb production on Tifton-85 pasture

The influence of early weaning and concentrate supplementation strategies on sward characteristics, forage chemical composition and lamb productivity were evaluated in four production systems on Tifton-85 pasture: suckling lambs not supplemented until slaughter; suckling lambs supplemented with concentrate in creep feeding until slaughter; early-weaned lambs not supplemented until slaughter; and early-weaned lambs supplemented with concentrate until slaughter. Structural, morphological and productive characteristics of pasture were measured. The forage was chemically analyzed to estimate its composition. Lambs average daily gain and productivity were calculated. Sward height, forage and morphological components mass were lower in systems without weaning. Forage production was higher in systems with supplementation. Higher levels of neutral and acid detergent fiber were observed in forage ingested by lambs in creep feeding and by weaned and unsupplemented lambs. Average daily gain was higher for lambs in creep feeding (275 g/d) and lower for the weaned and unsupplemented animals (57 g/d). Productivity was higher for weaned and supplemented lambs (21 kg lamb body weight, BW gain/ha/d). Lower productivity was observed in systems without supplementation (5 kg lamb BW gain/ha/d on average). Ewes modify the sward conditions improving the pasture characteristics and the quality of forage produced. Changes in sward conditions affect the chemical composition of forage ingested by lambs. Early weaning may be an alternative to maximize pasture utilization in small areas. Concentrate supplementation may increase lamb performance and productivity in grazing systems. If the objective is to improve lamb individual performance, creep feeding should be used.
