This article aims to (re)visit the concept of dependency as a category of investigation of (and from) Latin America, by means of a decolonial critical historical perspective, in order to increase space for debates on organization studies and promote alternatives to the neoliberal order. This essay will focus on dependency studies conducted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) during the 1950s and early 1960s. The decolonial perspective is a theoretical construction by Latin American authors who deem themselves as heirs of the long-standing tradition of critical social thought in the region, where the dependency theory is situated. The proposals of dependency authors challenged the main orthodox theories from the North produced at that time. Through the concept of center-periphery, the denunciation of asymmetries in the relations between these regions, and the recognition of interdependency between development and underdevelopment, the concept of dependency was (re)elaborated along the 1950s and 1960s by many Latin American authors as a category of investigation of the reality of (and from) the region. These investigations aimed not only to formulate theoretical constructions, but also to transform reality by creating various organizations and institutions that might serve the purpose of overcoming underdevelopment. Denunciating the historicity of the underdevelopment situation has unveiled the neutrality nature of the economism of theories produced in the North and promoted a theoretical encounter between economics and politics that has much to contribute to the field of organization studies.

Abstract Purpose We engage in a particular way the Anglo-American claim that a more performative Critical Management Studies (CMS) is needed to foster transformations in the “world out there” by putting into practice our learnings from a case study at Galpao Aplauso (GA), an NGO located in Brazil, which main role is to (re)socialize dispossessed youngsters through a critical methodology informed by anthropophagy. Design/methodology/approach Drawing upon an engaged investigation informed by both performative CMS and decoloniality from Latin America we embody a performative CMS “otherwise.” Through the engagement with GA, and corresponding disengagement with our institutions, we propose decolonial anthropophagy as a way to move beyond Eurocentric critiques of Eurocentrism and decolonial work monopolized by full-time academics. Findings From a decolonial perspective it is shown that the performative turn within CMS could be used as a way of bringing “critical development” and “critical knowledge” to “subalterns” and the “rest of the world” from a perspective of coloniality. An anthropofagic perspective on decoloniality and critique shows that “subalterns” have much to teach us and our institutions and represents a way to decolonize theory-practice and academic-nonacademic divides. Originality/value The critical-decolonial anthropophagic perspective put forward in this chapter may represent an opportunity for CMS to move beyond much of its Eurocentric traditions, thus enlarging its geographic and cultural references. It may offer CMS an alternative critical performativity concept from the South which enables CMS to become a “re/disconnector,” instead of a connector, between the Euro-American traditions and the “rest of the world,” and making things happen “otherwise.”

Administration is currently the most offered course in Brazil, responsible for 20% of undergraduate students. Therefore, educators have a big responsibility to reflect on the content of the courses. The reflection proposed here is an immersion into the 1950’s, when the first graduation schools were created. It is a reflection based on a dialogue between documents of that time and three sources of testimonies of former students and former professors of the Brazilian School of Public Administration (EBAP): a) journals of that time; b) testimonies collected for a book published to celebrate the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration’s (EBAPE) 50th anniversary; and c) interviews with students and professors who attended EBAP in the 1950s. The science of administration in the 1950s was associated to development. It rejected the apriorism of the scientific management received from the US, it also sought – through the social sciences – to critically promote content that fostered the adaptation of imported techniques to our reality. In this quest to represent the local context, EBAP approached the propositions of the Superior Institute of Brazilian Studies (ISEB) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The apprehension of the local context is critical to form good professionals. Looking at the efforts of EBAP in order to build a Brazilian administration field in the 1950s, and the contributions that ISEB and ECLAC gave to this endeavor, can help to find ways to (re)connect the science of administration to the national context and, consequently, provide relevant content to our graduates.

This article moves beyond international management (IM) and international business (IB) literatures and the corresponding neoliberal western order through a trans/interdisciplinary approach that rescues the international management-governance nexus. Drawing upon the basic tenets of pluriversaltransmodernity and the recognition of the geopolitical dimension that has been marginalized by IB/IM the analysis of post-1990 process of (re)construction of a Luso-Brazilian or Brasilo-Portuguese order that challenges the hegemony of the neoliberal order is undertaken through the recognition of the international relations (IR) literature and the desubalternization of local knowledges in GI/NI informed by the concept of economic diplomacy. This paper shows how and why business and government organizations mobilize and constitute the governance-management nexus to (re)build a Luso-Brazilian order and help overcome historical restrictions imposed by eurocentrism. In the end the article stands for the liberation of IB/IM as a way to build a new order in management towards a world in which many worlds and knowledges could coexist. This article moves beyond international management (IM) and international business (IB) literatures and the corresponding neoliberal western order through a trans/interdisciplinary approach that rescues the international management-governance nexus.
