41.1: Distinguished Paper: The World's First Photo Alignment LCD Technology Applied to Generation Ten Factory

Koichi Miyachi; Kazuki Kobayashi; Yuichiro Yamada; Shigeaki Mizushima

We developed the new photo-alignment technology for the large size LCD-TV panel and we named our technology Ultraviolet induced multi-domain Vertical Alignment(UVA2). The transmittance, contrast ratio and response time of LCD-TV are drastically improved, because the photo-alignment layer results in uniform surface with pre-tilt. The UV2A technology has been successfully applied to our Gen 10 factory.

The presence of ionic charges in a liquid crystal layer causes the generation of residual direct current (dc) voltage (Vrdc) in a liquid crystal cell. Vrdc is one of the most important factors governing the image quality of liquid crystal displays, because the existence of Vrdc causes the image sticking phenomenon. We studied the generation mechanism of Vrdc based on a model of the adsorption and desorption of the ionic charges at the interface between the liquid crystal and alignment layer. In this paper, we propose three evaluation parameters, (i) saturated residual dc voltage, (ii) time to reach its saturation state, and (iii) relaxation time during the open circuit state after applying the external dc voltage, for effective evaluation of liquid crystal and alignment layer materials from the viewpoint of the improvement of the image sticking.

41.1: Invited Paper: High Performance TFT-LCDs for AVC Applications

Yutaka Ishii; Shigeaki Mizushima; Masaya Hijikigawa

Advanced-Super-View (ASV) technology is proposed to achieve high performance TFT-LCDs, in this paper. The ASV-LCDs have high performance characteristics such as high contrast, high brightness, wide-viewing angle, and fast response. The ASV is very promising technology for applications of Audio-Visual Computing.

Temperature dependence of residual DC voltage and its evaluation parameter related to liquid-crystal and alignment-layer materials

Masanobu Mizusaki; Tetsuya Miyashita; Tatsuo Uchida; Yuichiro Yamada; Yutaka Ishii; Shigeaki Mizushima

— The temperature dependence of residual DC voltage was studied based on the adsorption and desorption of ions in the liquid-crystal (LC) layer to and from the interface between the LC and alignment layers during the application of an external DC offset voltage. The relaxation process of the adsorbed ions during the open-circuit state was also studied after applying the DC offset voltage. Those processes were found to follow the Arrhenius rule, and a new evaluation parameter related to the temperature is proposed for the design of the LC and alignment-layer materials.

Local wet etching of glasses by acidification utilizing electrochemistry

Kazuya Tsujino; Shigeki Imai; Chia-Lung Lee; Michio Matsumura; Shigeaki Mizushima

A new local wet etching method for microstructuring glass substrates without using photolithographic masking is presented. By utilizing local acidification of fluoride solution by electrochemical water oxidation reaction on micrometer-sized Pt electrodes, fine grooves were formed in silicate glass substrates. The groove formation speed was increased with increase in potential applied to the Pt electrode and was dependent on the glass type (silica, borosilicate or soda-lime).

High speed standard cell using bootstrapped technology for LTPSTFT

Takafumi Sato; Shigeaki Mizushima; Shigeki Imai; Yasoji Suzuki; Shinichi Murata

In this paper, a synchronous high-speed logic standard cells using bootstrapped technology for low temperature poly silicon thin film transistor -liquid crystal display (LTPS TFT-LCD) panel is proposed. The proposed TFT standard cells operate at high frequency region owing to the deep non-saturation operation by using the bootstrapped technology (BST). The proposed TFT standard cells can be reduced the pattern size by using the TFT capacitors for the bootstrapped capacitors. To confirm some characteristics of the proposed TFT standard cells, a full adder (FA) are simulated. As a result, the power delay products obtain about 1/5-9/10 times less value than that of the conventional standard cells using LTPS TFT.
