A method to determine the composition of the grain boundary phases in sintered silicon nitride was derived using an AEM (Analytical Electron Micriscope) with an UTW-EDX (Ultra-Thin Window Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer). The composition of the specimen was determined by the peak ratio of the EDX spectra for rare earth, silicon, nitrogen, and oxygen ions.
