For multi-media communications, high capacity and flexible data transmission systems, such as the Passive Optical Network (PON), are in strong demand. In such point-multipoint communication systems, however, it is necessary to handle data packets at the same bit-rate. This precondition makes the PON system inflexible. If the PON system could handle multi-bit-rate packets, the user could choose the type of Optical Network Unit (ONU) needed making it easy to accommodate multiple users. Accordingly, we developed a 3R regeneration circuit for multi-bit-rate packets for use at the Optical Line Termination (OLT) point. It will greatly improve the flexibility of the PON system. We intend to extend the circuit to handle wider ranges of bit rates.

We propose a transcoding from 64B/66B to (512*N)B/(513*N+1)B for bandwidth-efficient transmission of lOGb/s, 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet (10/40/100 GbE). We clarify the bit-error tolerance with more than a 10 billion years of mean time to false packet acceptance (MTTFPA) for transcoded 40 GbE transport over OTN. We also propose that the 512B/514B code with Forward Error Correction is applicable to the 10/40/100 GbE transmission.

This paper describes the first experiment on Multi-Rail and MultiLane technologies using global networks. These technologies leverage end-host and network parallel resources, e.g., processor cores and lambda paths, to achieve large bandwidths.

In this paper, network maintenance costs are evaluated quantitatively to confirm the effectiveness of a scheduled maintenance scheme for optical networks. Numerical simulations show that truck-roll maintenance is drastically reduced with 2 redundant links. The scheduled maintenance scheme is cost effective when the truck-roll cost exceeds about 5 times that of scheduled maintenance and the transponder cost is less than about 20 times as much as the scheduled maintenance cost.
