The reality of precaution: comparing risk regulation in the United States and Europe, edited by J.B. Wiener et al., RFF Press, 2011

Sietske Veenman; Marjolein B.A. van Asselt

Kahneman offers an easy-to-take rebuke of the theories behind economic rationality without coming off as someone with an axe to grind. Indeed, I would suggest that a main undercurrent of much of Kahneman’s work points in the direction rational benchmarks; in other words, the notion that we are not fully rational beings but that we should not stop striving toward that end. In my view, Thinking, Fast and Slow works on three levels. First, for those making their first foray into the decision sciences, the book provides an excellent introduction to – really – the seminal findings that have driven the science over the past several decades. Second, for those who have been working in the decision sciences for a while now, the book provides an accessible reminder of all the things we should know and not forget. Third, and most interesting to me, Thinking, Fast and Slow is a story about relationships; relationships between different theories about judgment and choice and – importantly – the relationships between people. Truth be told, Kahneman’s writing about his relationships with people and places is my favorite part of the book. He writes with real heart about his work with Amos Tversky, and recounts his time in Eugene with my colleague and friend Paul Slovic (and his wife Roz). He is also quick to give heaps of credit to – and acknowledge the work of – others, which is a trait I really admire. Indeed, it is a trait we should all strive to emulate.
