Aiming to select superior progenies for concentration of favorable alleles in a popcorn population on the third cycle of intrapopulation half-sib recurrent selection, one hundred and ninety-two progenies were evaluated in a completed randomized design with two replications, in two distinct environments: Colegio Estadual Agricola Antonio Sarlo, located in Campos dos Goytacazes, and Experimental Station of PESAGRO-RIO, located in Itaocara, Rio de Janeiro State, in 2004/05. The selection intensity was 15.6% that keep in touch thirty half-sib families for the continuity of the breeding program. The utilized selection indexes were the SMITH and HAZEL, PESEK and BAKER, WILLIAMS, and MULAMBA and MOCK. The MULAMBA and MOCK index propitiated more elevated magnitudes of the predicted gains for most of the traits, including popping expansion and grain yield, with values of 7.16% and 10.00%, respectively, utilizing arbitrary weight attributed by tentative.

The objective of this work was to obtain combining ability information about ten genitors of popcorn, in a circulant diallel crossing in two environments, for using in future breeding programs. The hybrids, genitors and controls were evaluated for plant height (PH), grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE), in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The joint analysis of circulant diallel showed reduced differences on the performance of the genotypes. The additive effects were more important than non-additive effects only for the CE. Genitors UNB2U-C1, BRS Angela, UNB2U-C2 and Vicosa-UFV were indicated for the intrapopulation breeding, while superior hybrids for the interpopulation breeding were PR-Ervalia x BRS Angela and UNB2U-C1 x BRS Angela.

Aiming to select superior progenies for concentration of favorable alleles in a popcorn population on the fifth cycle of intrapopulation full-sib recurrent selection, two hundred progenies were evaluated for six agronomic traits, including grain yield and popping expansion, in randomized complete block design with two replications within sets, in two distinct environments: Colegio Estadual Agricola Antonio Sarlo, in Campos dos Goytacazes, and Experimental Station of PESAGRO-RIO, located in Itaocara, Rio de Janeiro State, in 2007/2008. There were significant differences among families within sets in all traits, indicating the presence of genetic variability to be exploited in the future cycles. The utilized selection indexes were the Mulamba and Mock; and Smith and Hazel. The Mulamba and Mock index propitiated more elevated magnitudes of the predicted gains for most of the traits, including popping expansion and grain yield, with values of 6.01 and 8.53%, respectively, utilizing arbitrary weight attributed by tentative.

The aim of this work is to present the features of the popcorn cultivar UENF 14, developed from five cycles of recurrent selection of the population UNB-2U, to the scientific community. The cultivar produces yields of 3047.58 kg ha-1 and has popping expansion of 35.69 mL g-1.

Aiming to estimate the combining ability in tropical and temperate popcorn (Zea mays L. var. everta Sturt.) lines using multivariate analysis, ten popcorn lines were crossed in a complete diallel without reciprocals and the lines and hybrids were tested in two randomized complete block experiments with three replicates. Data were subjected to univariate and multivariate ANOVA, principal component analysis, and univariate and multivariate diallel analysis. For multivariate diallel analysis, variables were divided into group I (grain yield, mean weight of ears with grains, popping expansion, mean number of ears per plant, and final stand) and group II (days to silking, plant height, first ear height, and lodged or broken plants). The P2 line had positive values for agronomic traits related to yield and popping expansion for group I, whereas the P4 line had fewer days to silking and lodged or broken plants for group II. Regarding the hybrids, P2 x P7 exhibited favorable values for most of the analyzed variables and had potential for recommendation. The multivariate diallel analysis can be useful in popcorn genetic improvement programs, particularly when directed toward the best cross combinations, where the objective is to simultaneously obtain genetic gains in multiple traits.

Inoculation efficiency of Azospirillum brasilense on economising nitrogen fertiliser in landrace popcorn

Tainara Gomes Martins; Silvério de Paiva Freitas Júnior; Lucas Nunes da Luz; Cláudia Araújo Marco; Edilza Maria Felipe Vásquez

Nitrogen is one of the nutrients most demandedby popcorn, and one that most increases production costs. Considering these factors, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of inoculatingpopcorn seeds with Azospirillum brasilense together with four levels of nitrogen fertiliser, and its contribution to characteristics related to production. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of the Centre for Agrarian Sciences and Biodiversity of the Federal University of Cariri, in Crato, in the State of Ceara. Eight treatments were evaluated with four replications, using an experimental design of randomised blocks in a 2x4 factorial scheme corresponding to the presence and absence of inoculation, and to four doses of nitrogen as top dressing. The following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, height of ear insertion, number of plants, number of lodged plants, number of broken plants, number of poorly husked ears, ear diameter, ear length, number of ears, number of diseased ears, number of infested ears, grain productivity, ear weight, mean 100-grain weight, and expansion capacity. There were significant differences for most of the characteristics under evaluation, with an increase of 17.18% in the number of ears and 10.78% in grain productivity, reducing the top dressing to 50 kg ha-1 in the presence of A. brasiliensi. These results demonstrate the potential for economisingnitrogen fertiliser in popcorn production under the soil and climate conditions of the Cariri region of the State of Ceara.
