Abstract Cladonia litoralis is described as new to science. This conspicuous “cushion-like” lichen was found on granitic rocks in the rocky shore of Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. A description of the species is given together with notes on its chemistry, ecology and taxonomy. Related taxa are briefly discussed.

A survey of parmelioid eciliate lichen species occurring on rocky shores, from the states of Parana and Santa Catarina, revealed the presence of twelve species in the following genera: Canoparmelia (1), Hypotrachyna (2), Parmotrema (4), Pseudoparmelia (1) and Xanthoparmelia (4). New records are Parmotrema mordenii and Xanthoparmelia subramigera for Parana and Santa Catarina, Pseudoparmelia cubensis and Xanthoparmelia catarinae for Parana, and Hypotrachyna osseoalba, Parmotrema dactylosum and P. endosulphureum for Santa Catarina. A total of 14 species of Cladonia were found, of which four are new records: Cladonia latiloba and C. ochracea are new records to Parana; C. merochlorophaea and C. polyscypha are new records to Santa Catarina. Most of the species were found both in restinga vegetation and on rocky shores. Cladonia flagellaris and C. litoralis were found only on rocky shores while C. merochlorophaea, C. polyscypha, C. signata and C. solida only in restinga vegetation. Identification key, descriptions, comments and illustrations are presented.

Three new corticolous Diorygma species are described from Brazil. Diorygma incantatum has transversely 29–31-septate, filiform ascospores 105–108×6 µm, and produces an unidentified substance with Rf 44 in solvent C. Diorygma pauciseptatum produces norstictic and connorstictic acids and has transversely 7–9-septate, I+ blue-violet, large ascospores 28–32×7 µm, surrounded by a gelatinous sheath c. 2 µm wide that is often somewhat expanded at one end. Diorygma tocantinense contains protocetraric acid and has muriform, broadly fusiform ascospores with rounded ends, 24–40×10–15 µm, surrounded by an gelatinous sheath up to c. 5 µm wide that is somewhat expanded at central parts of the ascospore. A revised world key is given to all currently known species of Diorygma.

Little is known about the species of Cladonia that occur in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Information about the occurrence of lichens in restinga (a type of coastal vegetation in Brazil) is very scarce and there are no records from rocky shores. The main goal of the present work was to make an intensive survey of Cladonia species that grow in restinga and on the rocky shores of this region. Nine species belonging to Supergroups Cocciferae, Crustaceae and Perviae were found, and two of them were new records: Cladonia squamosa for Parana and C. palmicola for Santa Catarina. All of the species recorded occur in restinga and seven of them are also found along rocky shores. An identification key, descriptions, comments and illustrations are provided.

AbstractnFollowing a large-scale phylogenetic study of the lichenized genus Cora (Basidiomycota: Agaricales: Hygrophoraceae), we formally describe 70 new species, honouring the seventieth birthday of David Leslie Hawksworth, one of the preeminent figures in mycology and lichenology in the past 50xa0years. Based on an updated phylogeny using the ITS fungal barcoding locus, we now recognize 189 taxa in a genus that until recently was considered to represent a single species; including this contribution, 92 of these are formally recognized, including five taxa based on historical names or collections that have not been sequenced. Species of Cora can be recognized by a combination of morphological (size, colour, lobe configuration, surface hairs, hymenophore size and shape), anatomical (thallus thickness, cortex structure, photobiont type, hyphal papillae), and ecogeographical features (substrate, habitat, distribution), and a keytable allowing the identification of all accepted taxa is provided. The new species are: Cora accipiter Moncada, Madriñán & Lücking spec. nov., C. applanata Moncada, Soto-Medina & Lücking spec. nov., C. arachnodavidea Moncada, Dal Forno & Lücking spec. nov., C. arborescens Dal Forno, Chaves & Lücking spec. nov., C. arcabucana Moncada, C. Successive aqueous and alkaline extraction of the thallus of the lichenized fungus Heterodermia obscurata provided a highly branched glucomannan fraction (GM), whose chemical structure was determined. This was based on monosaccharide composition, methylation, partial acid hydrolysis, and NMR spectroscopic analysis. It consisted of a main chain of (1→6)-linked α-D-mannopyranosyl units, almost all being substituted at O-2 with α-D-glucopyranosyl, α-D-mannopyranosyl, and 4-O-substituted α-D-mannopyranosyl groups. Intra-peritoneal administration of this GM induced a marked and dose-dependent inhibition of acetic acid-induced visceral pain with an ID(50) of 0.6 (0.2-2.0) mg/kg and inhibition of 88±4%. It also reduced leukocyte migration by 58±4%, but did not alter plasmatic extravasation to the peritoneal cavity. The results suggest that the glucomannan from the H. obscurata might have potential for antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory utilization.
