Customer access protection unit for survivable FTTH network

Siti Asma Che Aziz; Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Kasmiran Jumari

This paper describes a protection against fiber fault in fiber line which is called Customer Access Protection Unit (CAPU) that will also being placed in customer end user in order to perform as smart restoration if there is uncertainty of fiber cut occurs in distribution region. Furthermore, this paper also includes the power penalty analysis for optical switch cascaded in our network protection design according to the CAPU device. This device is expected to perform as fast protection against failure and only increase low insertion loss in each remote node (RN).

Restoration scheme issues in fiber to the home Ethernet passive optical network (FTTH-EPON)

Siti Asma Che Aziz; Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Kasmiran Jumari

The smart and intelligent system of FTTH is expected to be a key element which provides centralized monitoring, survivability and instantly maintenance of FTTH customer access network. A challenging task for network planners is to reduce network protection costs while maintaining an acceptable level of survivability. In this paper, we implement a cost effective restoration scheme for a novel tree-based EPON architecture for Intermediate Split Structure (ISS) in the drop region section. The protection mechanism for tree based optical switch will have capability to divert the signal onto protection line according to the types of failure condition and location of failures in access network. This will ensure the data flow continuously due to breakdown occur in the network and instantly repair operation before it cause any major problem later. We employ the dedicated and shared protection in our design. Four faulty conditions are considered in this article and OptiSystem, Inc. software is used to prove the solution feasibility.

Aswir Premadi; Mohammad Syuhaimi Ab-Rahman; Siti Asma Che Aziz; Kasmiran Jumari

In this paper, we present access control system (ACS) a cost effective protection for fiber fault identification in fiber to the home (FTTH) passive optical network (PON). To achieve better protection, ACS can access by remote host via internet or LAN, with the specification available a complete system can be made with 24 man-hours. Our solution is shown to be effective in improving live-fiber services.

Restoration scheme implementation in automatic protection unit for FTTH passive optical network

Siti Asma Che Aziz; Mohamad Syuhaimi Ab Rahman; Siti Rahayu Hassan; Kasmiran Jumari

This paper focused on the implementation of automatic device switching to perform in restoration scheme located at distribution fiber section. This protection device is potentially will improve the system efficiency in order to provide the continuous data flow until it reach to the end user. We proposed for immediate split structure in EPON network when the signal is totally split when it pass through the optical splitter. The restoration scheme proposed in this paper was presented and the simulation results proved the system feasibility. The bit error rate (BER) performances are measured by a 1.25 Gp/s non- return-to zero (NRZ) pseudo random binary sequence (PBRS) with a pattern length of 231-1 for the downstream traffic between OLT and 8 ONUs. Our results were obtained by observing bit error rates, eye diagram, and optical power levels.

Automatic Protection Unit in Application of Restoration Scheme for FTTH Passive Optical Network

Siti Asma Che Aziz; Muhammad Syuhaimi Ab Rahman; Kasmiran Jumari

Fiber to the home (FTTH) network security has become a very essential and important topic for optical network. Fault isolation became important issues in order to provide an efficient FTTH network and simultaneously will provide continuous services to the end user without being interrupted by any failure in fiber line. Protection scheme against the failure in distribution fiber line is carried out using our protection and restoration scheme. This paper focused on the implementation of automatic device switching to perform in restoration scheme located at distribution fiber section. This protection device is potentially will improve the system efficiency in order to provide the continuous data flow until it reach to the end user. We implement for immediate split structure in Fiber to the Home (FTTH-EPON) network when the signal is totally split when it pass through the optical splitter. Automatic Protection Unit (APU) is an automatic switching device designed as a package that offered for the ease of customer to perform security and self restoration at the end user side. While in this paper also includes the power penalty analysis for optical switch cascaded in our network protection design according to the APU device.
