Research on oxidation kinetics of tight oil from Wolfcamp field

Siyuan Huang; Hu Jia; James J. Sheng

ABSTRACT Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry were performed on a tight oil that was collected from the Wolfcamp shale reservoir, USA. The results indicate that although the oil has similar properties to those of a light oil, it shows similar thermal-oxidative behaviors to those of a heavy oil. Kinetic data of the tight oil as activation energy and frequency factor were estimated by the Arrhenius method. This kinetic analysis could provide us insight to characterize the reactivity of the tight oil, and establish parameter values for kinetic models used in the numerical simulation of the air injection process.

Effect of shale core on combustion reactions of tight oil from Wolfcamp reservoir

Siyuan Huang; Hu Jia; James J. Sheng

ABSTRACT A thermogravimetry analyzer was employed to investigate the effect of the shale core on the combustion reactions of the tight oil from the Wolfcamp shale reservoir for the air injection process (AIP). The result indicated that the shale cuttings show strong catalytic effect on tight oil combustion process. A considerable amount of coke was formed at the end of the fuel deposition stage after the addition of shale cuttings. This phenomenon could be beneficial for the combustion process at the high-temperature combustion stage, which is favorable for the implementation of the AIP with a shale oil reservoir.

Exothermicity and oxidation behavior of tight oil with cuttings from the Wolfcamp shale reservoir

Siyuan Huang; Hu Jia; James J. Sheng

ABSTRACT Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to investigate the effect of shale core on the combustion reactions of tight oil from the Wolfcamp shale reservoir for the air injection process. The results indicated that the shale cuttings show a strong catalytic effect on the tight oil combustion process. It also implies the potential of the Wolfcamp shale reservoir for implementing air injection process. The effect of heating rates on light oil combustion was discussed, and corresponding recommendations were also made.
