This article presents the results of the study on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) on dengue in an urban community in Northeast of Brazil, and the risk situations involved in its transmission. The study was observational and used a semi-structured survey composed of questions about the disease and vector control measures, which was answered by residents of selected households (IC 95%) of the community of Santa Rosa, in the city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco State. The variables of the KAP were classified into appropriate, regular and insufficient. There is adequate knowledge about the characteristics of the vector and regular regarding the disease and the activities of control. The population does not know that the insecticide used in water is chemical and uses this water for domestic consumption and drinking. Regarding government activity the knowledge was insufficient. It also demonstrates a non appropriate attitude regarding the prevention of dengue and insufficient practice in the prevention of the vector in the household. The practice of water care was adequate for 41% of residents. The local risk situations raised are related to the intermittency in water and also behavioral.

Relying on a chemical war against the vector tends to pacify the population with false security, while a broad programme for better sanitary urban conditions could generate social mobilisation and co-responsibility of the population. Improvement of sanitary conditions is a long-term investment in population health, while pesticide use will have to be repeated. The Brazilian Association of Collective Health calls to stop the use of chemical products against A aegypti, especially in household water reservoirs, and prioritise sanitary measures.

Introduction This study was conducted in Brazil and Colombia, where dengue is endemic and vector control programs use chemical insecticides. Methods We identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices about dengue and determined the infestation levels of Aedes aegypti in one Brazilian and four Colombian communities. Results The surveys show knowledge of the vector, but little knowledge about diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Vector infestation indices show Brazil to have good relative control, while Colombia presents a high transmission risk. Conclusions Given the multidimensionality of dengue control, vertical control strategies are inadequate because they deny contextualized methods, alternative solutions, and local empowerment.

In the past few years the sugarcane agribusiness has been experiencing considerable expansion, being presented as a symbol of progress and the most developed industry in the country. In this article, we investigate the myths surrounding this sector of the Brazilian economy, revealing the environmental injustices and suffering experienced by northeastern workers who relocate every year to work in the sugarcane regions. We conducted a methodological study of the specialized literature on the sugarcane agribusiness and its interface with the migration of northeastern workers and the labor conditions and relations to which these individuals are subjected. We also use data from our own research developed in the micro regions of Pajeu in the State of Pernambuco and Princesa Isabel in the State of Paraiba. The data reveal the human and environmental unsustainability of the sugarcane agribusiness, demystifying the sweetness of sugarcane and purity of ethanol produced in Brazil, since this production is strongly influenced by perverse conditions, the social consequences of which have been the destruction of the environment and the flora and fauna, the exploitation of labor and workers in this process marked by illness and, in many cases, death.

Para detectar o uso abusivo de bebidas […]ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of common mental disorders and to analyze the associated factors in migrant and sugarcane workers. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 110 workers. Common mental disorders were evaluated using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), and sociodemographic, occupational, and lifestyle variables were studied. The CAGE questionnaire was used to detect the abuse of alcoholic beverages. RESULTS The prevalence of common mental disorders affected 40% of the workers and the association showed statistical significance for the positive result of the CAGE test, sickness, absence from work, and medical care during the harvest period. CONCLUSIONS The suspected cases of problem drinkers and the control mechanisms used by the mill for workers who miss work or become ill are factors that can cause common mental disorders.

Objective: to describe the occurrence of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, where a petroleum refinery will be installed. Methods: descriptive study of ALL in minors under age 15 assisted at two referral centers for childhood cancer – Centro de Oncohematologia Pediatrico/Hospital Oswaldo Cruz; and Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira [Instituto Materno-Infantil de Pernambuco (IMIP)] – in the period 2004-2008, from the municipalities of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Escada, Ipojuca, Jaboatao dos Guararapes and Moreno. Results: the authors identified, in both referral centers, 18 cases of ALL in minors under 15 living in these municipalities; the highest frequency occurred in the group with children under 4, with male predominance. Conclusion: it is necessary to organize the surveillance system on childrens environmental health in the region, with the participation of the Primary Health Care.
