This article proposes to define, contextualize and methodologically characterize the use of focal groups as a qualitative investigation technique committed to a comprehensive meta- scientific approach. The factors that affect focal groups discussion will be considered in the present work, as well as the outcomes of this investigation, the greatest methodological challenges of this technique. The present essay is divided into three sections: the first one covers wider methodological aspects and places the focal groups under the idiographic and hermeneutic approaches. The second section focuses on the definition and characterization of focal groups as a qualitative investigation technique, besides taking into account the methodological challenges of this technique and the factors that affect group discussion. To end it up, some considerations as far as the advantages and limitations of using this research technique are pointed out.

The article discusses the interview as a qualitative technique in the apprehension of perception and personal experience of world situations and events. The intersubjective relation, interviewer and interviewee, is of fundamental importance for allowing the access to the signs attributed by persons to the world events, as such product is the result of mutual influences in the interacting process in interview. The first section discusses the qualitative approach of the research and points the main differences towards the quantitative approach, as well as the theorical-methodological implications for using the interview as a technique for research. The second characterizes the qualitative interviews within the structure, types, participants role, and also discusses criteria in selecting the interviewees, representativity, validity, and trustworthiness in the results of the interpretations. The last section presents some considerations about the limits and possibilities in using the technique.

The issues discussed here drawn from the research on Political Ideology, Electoral Propaganda and Votes: the effect of “horario electoral” on the presidency campaign, in which were used depth interviews and focus group technies.

This article discusses the application of focus groups in the investigation of the organizational identity of a work cooperative, Cooperconfec, located in Salvador. The attempt was to investigate the factors related to the organizational identity of a cooperative, since this is based on horizontal work relationships, as opposed to the labor market, characterized by verticality. Two focus groups were formed with twenty cooperades seamstresses. The procedure was to analyze thematic content of the results in order to support making graphical representations related to the meanings of being part of a cooperative, to the previous experiences of professional socialization, and to the changes experienced after being made part of the cooperative. One of the conclusions was that organizational identity is based on the connection of the cooperative to the incubator, on the impact of the cooperative in the community, on the group work experience, and on the change in personal image.

A abordagem teorico-metodologica do estudo de caso e uma tendencia na ciencia social aplicada e, em especial, na administracao. O objetivo deste artigo e o de discutir nao so aspectos conceituais e metodologicos dessa abordagem apontados na literatura, como tambem analisar 158 artigos publicados no periodo de 2001 a 2004 nos ENANPADs e em quatro periodicos nacionais da area de administracao. Uma das conclusoes e a de que apesar de os estudos de casos serem apresentados de modo mais aprofundado do que superficial, a construcao teorica associada a comparacao com outros casos ainda e insuficiente. Reafirma-se tambem o predominio da tecnica qualitativa, pois a porcentagem encontrada em cada uma das publicacoes analisadas ultrapassou 75%. O uso de tecnicas combinadas tem crescido nos ultimos anos, em detrimento do uso isolado da tecnica de entrevista. A ascensao do estudo de caso na atualidade torna necessario ampliar o dialogo de pesquisadores de diversas areas para que a opcao e a adocao a esse modo de fazer ciencia sejam decorrentes da analise critica e consciente de suas possibilidades e limites para a producao do conhecimento, em que pese a triangulacao interna (varias fontes de coleta de dados) e a triangulacao externa (que requer a explicitacao clara dos procedimentos metodologicos adotados).

This paper aims to analyze the inferential processes underpinning interpretation in qualitative Content Analysis and that are related with a triad compounded by theory, phenomenon and datum. In the first section, a brief history of this method and of its main modalities and techniques are presented. In the second, the standard procedures of a categorical Content Analysis are discussed, according to Bardins perspective. Specifically, the paper discusses the codification and categorization processes and their underlying logical mechanisms: induction and deduction. Some questions and epistemological issues are introduced concerning the operationalization of both these mechanisms in Content Analysis and the limits of treating the later merely as an ad hoc resource. In the next two sections, the article provides a critical analysis of the qualitative Content Analysis, taking into account the three following interconnected components: phenomenon, theory and data. O artigo relata procedimentos de construcao e validacao de um inventario que inclui escalas de aprendizagem de competencias, de suporte a transferencia de aprendizagem e de desempenho docente (ASOD), e apresenta resultados das relacoes entre aprendizagem, suporte e desempenho docente. O Inventario mede tanto a aprendizagem quanto o desempenho de docentes em cinco dominios de competencias (ensino, pesquisa, extensao, gestao e competencias gerais). A escala de suporte a transferencia subdivide-se em suportes psicossociais e materiais. Foram realizadas analises fatoriais, correlacoes e regressao multipla. Os indicadores psicometricos sugerem que o inventario apresenta evidencias de validacao para a amostra de 219 docentes do IFBA participantes. Os resultados da regressao indicam que o desempenho em cada dominio e predito pela aprendizagem correspondente ao mesmo dominio. O suporte a aprendizagem nao se mostrou preditor do desempenho docente. O inventario pode ser usado no aprimoramento de praticas institucionais de avaliacao e desenvolvimento profissional do docente.

Este artigo discorre sobre a producao cientifica na subarea de conhecimento da psicologia do trabalho e das organizacoes e sinaliza os desafios metodologicos que cercam esta subarea do conhecimento. Tres caracteristicas marcam a subarea: 1) o dominio multi e interdisciplinar, 2) a constante tensao entre as demandas de compreensao dos processos psicologicos e de solucao de problemas que desafiam organizacoes, gestores, trabalhadores e formuladores de politicas publicas laborais, e 3) multiplos niveis (individual, grupal, societal e governamental) de analise das questoes que cercam o dia a dia de trabalhadores e gestores. Inicia-se pela demarcacao conceitual. Na secao subsequente argumenta-se a favor da relacao entre o crescimento e diversificacao da subarea e a expansao da pos-graduacao no Brasil. Segue-se um panorama das revisoes de literatura nacionais e internacionais visando a ressaltar a diversidade na pratica de pesquisa. Finaliza-se com consideracoes sobre os desafios metodologicos para alcancar niveis mais elevados de amadurecimento cientifico.

Attributions of causes for unemployment and personal values. This article explored the association between explanations of unemployment and values. 205 people - employed and unemployed - were part of the study. Furnhams attribution scale on unemployment (1982) and a short version of Schwartzs. Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ 21) included in the European Social Survey (ESS), together with a social and demographic questionnaire were used. The conclusion was that employed and unemployed showed no differences in the attribution of causes for unemployment. In relation to values, unemployed showed differences in universalism and benevolence, linked to the domain of self-trascendence, whereas employed individuals had a greater attach to security values, linked to the domain of conservation. Finally, it was found a significant association between fatalistic attributions and security and tradition values, between tradition and social attributions and between stimulation and individualistic reasons for unemployment.

As tecnologias de comunicacao tem papel renovador na contemporaneidade, no que se refere a interacao humana. No entanto, pode-se destacar sua influencia em outros aspectos do cotidiano, como sua influencia na pesquisa. Este artigo tem como objetivo descrever e discutir os aspectos que envolvem a aplicacao de grupos focais em ambiente virtual, denominados grupos focais on-line, visando a destacar fatores que podem orientar o seu uso em pesquisa com destaque para aquelas dirigidas para investigar opinioes e percepcoes de atores sociais. Os aspectos abordados neste artigo estao baseados em parte na experiencia de aplicacao dos autores, com vistas a elaboracao de tese de doutorado. Abordam-se tambem os fundamentos teoricos de grupos focais presenciais e sua transposicao para o ambiente virtual. Por fim, apresentam-se algumas sugestoes aos interessados nesta estrategia de pesquisa com base nos resultados da experiencia de aplicacao realizada.
