Perception gaps between IS academics and IS practitioners: an exploratory study

Sooun Lee; Seok Ha Koh; David C. Yen; Hung-Lian Tang

It has long been recognized that there are significant perception gaps between information systems (IS) academics and IS practitioners with regards to the required IS knowledge/skills to perform their professional jobs successfully. Unfortunately, there is no consensus about which knowledge/skills are more important in the IS profession. With the rapidly changing IS technology and IS industry, a study was urgently needed to find and understand the gaps between these two groups. We report here on a study to measure the gap.

Critical knowledge/skill sets required by industries: an empirical analysis

David C. Yen; Sooun Lee; Seok Ha Koh

Classifies the critical knowledge/skill set according to content or domain of knowledge by means of a survey. This is conducted in accordance with what IS practitioners and educators can easily relate. The survey uses this approach and includes four broad categories of critical Information Systems (IS) knowledge/skills: IS technology knowledge/skills, organizational and societal knowledge/skills, interpersonal knowledge/skills, and personal trait knowledge/skills.

Perception Gaps about Skills Requirement for Entry-Level IS Professionals between Recruiters and Students: An Exploratory Study

Sooun Lee; Xiang Fang

Dramatic changes in the U.S. economic situations and offshore outsourcing trends in the IT Information Technology industry have affected the IS Information Systems job market and recruiters with regard to IS knowledge/skills that their new hires should possess. Keeping pace with these changes presents a challenge for IS recruiters and students. There is an urgent need for a study that investigates the perception gaps between IS recruiters and students about the knowledge/skill sets required for a new entry-level IS hire. This study reports the findings from a survey of IS recruiters and IS students in the U.S., detailing the differences of their understanding about the knowledge/skills requirement.

Seok Ha Koh; Sooun Lee; David C. Yen; Douglas Havelka

Building on prior research, a field study of IT professionals is performed to determine if and how IT professionals’ technical skills requirement change as they gain experience in the workplace. Based on the results of this study, it appears that IT professionals: (1) are required to have different technical skills as their careers progress, and (2) do possess different technical skills at different stages in their careers.

Transition of Knowledge/Skills Requirement for Entry-Level is Professionals: An Exploratory Study Based on Recruiters' Perception

Xiang Fang; Sooun Lee; Seokha Koh

It has long been recognized that a college graduate with an IS (Information Systems) degree may not be properly equipped with knowledge/skills required for performing an entry-level professional job successfully. Dramatic changes in the U.S economy and offshore outsourcing trends in the IT (Information Technology) industry have been correlated with the recent IT job scarcity and the changing preference of IS recruiters with regard to IS knowledge/skills that their new hires should possess. Keeping pace with these changes presents a major challenge for IS academicians. There is an urgent need for a study which identifies the current knowledge/skill sets required for a new entry-level IS hire. This study reports the findings from a survey of IS recruiters in the U.S., detailing the critical knowledge/skill sets desirable in entry-level IS professionals.

An Empirical Study about the Critical Factors Affecting MIS Students' Job Opportunities

Xiang Fang; Sooun Lee

For the first time in many years, Management Information Systems (MIS) students and faculty are seeking ways to improve full-time job placement for program graduates. Due to sharp IT budget cuts, the slowing economy, and outsourcing, job opportunities for MIS graduates have become scarcer than ever before. In addition to achieving good academic performance, MIS students have adopted aggressive approaches to securing employment, such as building MIS-related internship experiences, adding additional majors, and taking more technical course work. Research on the critical factors affecting MIS full-time job opportunities has not received enough attention, and little empirical research is currently available. There are several factors generally known to affect full-time job opportunities for graduates. These factors include the intern-like work experience, nature of work experience, multiple majors, the timing of major declaration, grade point average, and gender difference. An urgently needed empirical study has been completed and the results are reported in this paper.

The Year 2000 crisis: the ongoing business

Seok Ha Koh; Sooun Lee; David C. Yen

The year 2000 (Y2K) remedy process is an ongoing business to be continued even after the rollover of the century. This is especially true for the organizations that fail to cope with the crisis properly. In this paper, major problems associated with the crisis are identified and key remedy issues such as effective remedy methods, a systematic implementation model, compliance testing, and resource management issues are identified and presented. Post‐millennium remedy guidelines are also suggested, as the Y2K crisis will be an ongoing business for many organizations for an extended period of time after the rollover of the millennium.
