1.2 Three pillars enabling the Internet of Everything: Smart everyday objects, information-centric networks, and automated real-time insights

The Internet of Everything is about to become ubiquitous, it will indeed be “all around us and reside into the background of our lives” as predicted over three decades ago. Three technologies will make the IoE possible: smart everyday objects, information-centric networks, and automated real-time insights. This paper highlighted the central role of electronics in each of these three pillars: (1) smart everyday objects that sense data everywhere will be created by printed hybrid logic and sensor circuits using organic inks and “inks” containing microchips; (2) information-centric networks that increase the Internets versatility, reduce its traffic congestion, and improve security, will require novel hardware and software; and (3) the creation of automated real-time insights at the “edge” of the IoE network will require deep-learning chips and novel machine-intelligence software.
