Possible Photometric Evidence of Ejection of Bullet-like Features in the Relativistic Jet Source SS 433

Sandip K. Chakrabarti; Sujay Pal; A. Nandi; B. G. Anandarao; Soumen Mondal

SS 433 is well known for its precessing twin jets having optical bullets inferred through spectroscopic observation of Hα lines. Recently, Chakrabarti et al. described processes that may be operating in the accretion disk of SS 433 to produce these bullets. In a recent multiwavelength campaign, we find a sharp rise in intensity in timescales of a few minutes in X-ray, IR, and radio waves through photometric studies. We interpret them to be possible evidence of ejection of bullet-like features from accretion disks.

We conducted a multiwavelength campaign in 2002 September-October, to observe SS 433. We used the Giant Meter Radio Telescope for radio observations, the Physical Research Laboratory Infrared Telescope at Mt Abu for infrared (IR), the ARIES telescope at Nainital for optical photometry, the telescope at the Vainu Bappu observatory for spectral measurements and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer for X-ray observations. We find sharp variations in intensity on time-scales of a few minutes in the X-ray, IR and radio wavelengths. Differential photometry in the IR observations clearly indicates significant intrinsic variations on short time-scales of minutes throughout the campaign. Combining the results for these wavelengths, we find a signature of delay of about two days between the IR and radio signals. The X-ray spectrum yielded double Fe line profiles which corresponded to red and blue components of the relativistic jet. We also present the broad-band spectrum averaged over the campaign duration.

NON-LINEARITIES IN ACCRETION AND WINDS AROUND ROTATING BLACK HOLES USING PSEUDO-KERR GEOMETRY

Soumen Mondal; Sandip K. Chakrabarti

Non-linearities such as shock waves are common in accretion flows around compact objects. Exact quantification of these non-linearities will help testing time-dependent numerical codes. In this paper, we study the detailed properties of these non-linear waves in a steady accretion or wind flows around a rotating black hole. We use a pseudo-Kerr geometry for this purpose. In the context of energy preserving standing shocks, we find that there are two shock locations for a given pair of conserved flow parameters, such as specific energy and angular momentum. We also show that as the Kerr parameter is increased, the shock location moves closer to the black hole. We discuss the astrophysical implications of such solutions.

Optical spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi – from the outburst of 2006 to quiescence

Optical spectra of the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi beginning one day after discovery to over a year after the outburst are presented here. The spectral evolution is found to be similar to that in previous outbursts. The early phase spectra are dominated by hydrogen and helium (I & II) lines. Coronal and nebular lines appear in the later phases. Emission line widths are found to narrow with time, which is interpreted as a shock expanding into the red giant wind. Using the photoionisation code CLOUDY, spectra at nine epochs spanning 14 months after the outburst peak, thus covering a broad range of ionisation and excitation levels in the ejecta, are modelled. The best-fit model parameters indicate the presence of a hot white dwarf source with a roughly constant luminosity of 1.26 x 10^{37} erg/s. During first three months, the abundances (by number) of He, N, O, Ne, Ar, Fe, Ca, S and Ni are found above solar abundances; abundances of these elements decreased in the later phase. Also presented are spectra obtained during quiescence. Photoionisation model of the quiescence spectrum indicates the presence of a low luminosity accretion disk. The helium abundance is found to be subsolar at quiescence.

Infrared Observations of Comet Hale–Bopp (C/1995 O1) from Gurushikhar Observatory

T. Chandrasekhar; N. M. Ashok; Anandamayee Tej; Soumen Mondal; P. V. Watson

During the recent apparition of comet Hale—Bopp (1995 O1) near infrared photometric observations were carried out in the J, H, K filter bands and also in the 3.0—3.4 μm region at the 1.2 m telescope at Gurushikkar, India. The effective temperature of the comet was substantially higher than the equilibrium blackbody temperature. A mean superheat value of 1.83 was derived in the post-perihelion phase which implies that a large fraction of the grain population are made up of small and hot grains with radii <0.5 μm. High albedo values of ∼0.4 were also derived in the scattering angle range 135° to 160° which could explain the unusual brightness of comet Hale—Bopp.

The Planck Cold Clump G108.37-01.06: A Site of Complex Interplay between H ii Regions, Young Clusters, and Filaments

Somnath Dutta; Soumen Mondal; M. R. Samal; Jessy Jose

The {\it Planck} Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) are the possible representations of the initial conditions and the very early stages of star formation. With an objective to understand better the star and star cluster formation, we probe the molecular cloud associated with PGCC G108.37-01.06 (hereafter, PG108.3), which can be traced in a velocity range
