Synthetic Communications | 1994

An Improved Procedure for Aromatic Cyanation

David M. Tschaen; Richard Desmond; Anthony O. King; M. C. Fortin; Brenda Pipik; Steven A. King; Thomas R. Verhoeven

Abstract An effective method for conversion of aryl bromides to aryl cyanides is described. The procedure involves treatment of the aryl halide with zinc cyanide in the presence of a catalytic amount of palladium (0).

Tetrahedron-asymmetry | 1998

Efficient asymmetric synthesis of ABT-594; a potent, orally effective analgesic

John K. Lynch; Mark W. Holladay; Keith B. Ryther; Hao Bai; Chi-Nung Hsiao; Howard E. Morton; Daniel A. Dickman; William Arnold; Steven A. King

Abstract A concise asymmetric synthesis of ( R )-2-chloro-5-(2-azetidinylmethoxy)pyridine (ABT-594) is presented in which the key intermediate t -butoxycarbonyl protected (2 R )-azetidinylalcohol is obtained in three steps from the dibenzyl ester of D-aspartic acid in 44% yield and >99% ee.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1995

Efficient synthesis of carbapenems via the oxalimide cyclization. Manipulation of protecting groups at the oxalimide stage

Steven A. King; Brenda Pipik; Andrew S. Thompson; Ann E. DeCamp; Thomas R. Verhoeven

Abstract An efficient synthesis of the carbepenem nucleus from TBDMS protected acetoxyazetidinone via oxalimide cyclization technology is demonstrated. A key step is desilylation of the oxalimide intermediate. Access to a variety of protecting group schemes is demonstrated.

Synthetic Communications | 1997

Preparation of Cyclic Sulfites by Transesterification of Diols and Diisopropyl Sulfite

Steven A. King; Brenda Pipik; David A. Conlon; M. Bhupathy

Abstract Cyclic Sulfites of 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-diols can be prepared in high yield by acid or base catalyzed transesterification with diisopropyl sulfite.
