Stress hysteresis and mechanical properties of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited dielectric films

Jeremy Thurn; Robert F. Cook; Mallika Kamarajugadda; Steven Paul Bozeman; Laura C. Stearns

A comprehensive survey is described of the responses of three plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited dielectric film systems to thermal cycling and indentation contact. All three films—silicon oxide, silicon nitride, and silicon oxy-nitride—exhibited significant nonequilibrium permanent changes in film stress on thermal cycling or annealing. The linear relationship between stress and temperature changed after the films were annealed at 300 °C, representing a structural alteration in the film reflecting a change in coefficient of thermal expansion or biaxial modulus. A double-substrate method was used to deduce both thermoelastic properties before and after the anneal of selected films and the results were compared with the modulus deconvoluted from small-scale depth-sensing indentation experiments (nanoindentation). Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and hydrogen forward scattering were used to deduce the composition of the films and it was found that all the films contained significant amounts of h...

Abstract The four-point bend split-beam method is used to quantitatively determine the interfacial fracture resistance and crack velocity as a function of mechanical energy release rate of the weakest interface in a thin film stack. Various interfaces of importance to magnetic storage devices are studied, including copper or nickel–iron (permalloy) on silicon oxynitride with additional adhesion promoters. The dynamics and kinetics of the four-point bend test are fully elucidated. A model for environmentally-controlled crack growth previously applied to bulk ceramics is used here as a model for interfacial crack growth and is found to fit the kinetic data.

Finite-element modeling and micromagnetic modeling of perpendicular writers

Olle Heinonen; Steven Paul Bozeman

We compare finite-element modeling (FEM) and fully micromagnetic modeling results of four prototypical writers for perpendicular recording. In general, the agreement between the two models is quite good in the vicinity of saturated or near-saturated magnetic material, such as the pole tip, for quantities such as the magnetic field, the gradient of the magnetic field and the write width. However, in the vicinity of magnetic material far from saturation, e.g., return pole or trailing edge write shield, there can be large qualitative and quantitative differences.

Micromagnetic recording model of writer geometry effects at skew

M. L. Plumer; Steven Paul Bozeman; J. van Ek; Richard P. Michel

The effects of the pole-tip geometry at the air-bearing surface on perpendicular recording at a skew angle are examined through modeling and spin-stand test data. Head fields generated by the finite element method were used to record transitions within our previously described micromagnetic recording model. Write-field contours for a variety of square, rectangular, and trapezoidal pole shapes were evaluated to determine the impact of geometry on field contours. Comparing results for recorded track width, transition width, and media signal to noise ratio at 0° and 15° skew demonstrate the benefits of trapezoidal and reduced aspect-ratio pole shapes. Consistency between these modeled results and test data is demonstrated.
