Muktesh Chander; Sudhir K. Jain; Ravi Shankar

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify various information security management parameters and develop a conceptual framework for it.Design/methodology/approach – Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and MICMAC approaches have been used to identify and classify the key factors of information security management based on the direct and indirect relationship of these factors.Findings – The research presents a classification of key parameters according to their driving power and dependence which enable information security management in an organization. It also suggests parameters on which management should pay more attention.Research limitations/implications – In the paper, 12 parameters were identified based on a literature study and expert help. It is possible to identify some more parameters for ISM development. The help of experts was also used to identify the contextual relationship among the variables for the ISM model. This may introduce some element of bias. Although a relationship mode...

Analyzing R&D efficiency in Asia and the OECD: An application of the Malmquist Productivity Index

V.J. Thomas; Sudhir K. Jain; Seema Sharma

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in R&D efficiency among scholars and policy makers across the world. Several Asian countries have shown remarkable progress in R&D efficiency which seems to be at the cost of the leading nations like USA and the UK. This study investigates R&D efficiency in 22 countries, 20 of them members of the OECD, and the Russian Federation and China. The analysis is carried out using the Malmquist Productivity Index for the periods 2002–04 and 2004–06. The R&D inputs taken are gross domestic expenditure on R&D and the number of full-time researchers per million population. The outputs taken are patents granted to residents and the number of scientific publications indexed in the Science Citation Index. We find that China exhibits a rapid increase in number of scientific publications while the Republic of Korea shows exemplary performance in patenting among residents in recent years. Thus we confirm the results of some earlier studies, and contribute mainly by investigating R&D efficiencies using the MPI which is especially useful in comparing productivity in multiple decision making units over periods of time, and examining reasons for the efficiencies of China and the Republic of Korea. The results indicate significant improvements in technical capabilities of the residents of China and the Republic of Korea.

Flexibility and Sustainability of Mentorship Model for Entrepreneurship Development: An Exploratory Study

Deepali Mishra; Sudhir K. Jain

The myth that entrepreneurs are born, no more holds good, rather it is well recognized now that the entrepreneurs can be created and nurtured through appropriate interventions. The flexibility of Mentorship has been extended to provide support to first generation entrepreneurs of SMEs who face problems when they open their nascent Enterprise. The study is conducted keeping the view point of potential entrepreneurs who generally do not have any business background but are enthusiastic to start a new venture, thereby needing a Mentorship support. The objective of the study is to analyze the synergy between Mentor and Mentee and their co-existence in the firm in terms of benefits associated to both of them particularly specifying Mentee’s perception for Mentor. Analysis is done through MSVI (Mean Scale Value Index) and ANOVA which is used to analyze the statistical significance between the potential entrepreneurs and their level of interest in entrepreneurship and their perception towards the need of Mentor. The main contribution of the paper is to enhance the understanding of mentorship for first generation entrepreneurs.

Business Succession Planning in Indian MSM-FOBEs: A Study Based on Managerial-Role Employees

Sudhir K. Jain; Nalin Jain

Family owned business enterprises (FOBEs) are prolific contributors to the Indian economy. Micro, small and medium family owned business enterprises (MSM-FOBEs) form a substantial portion of Indian FOBEs. MSM-FOBEs are highly vulnerable to intergenerational business succession. The extent of succession planning, an important factor for the success of business succession, varies with the size of the MSM-FOBE. The number of managerial-role employees is one of the indicators of the size of the MSM-FOBE. The importance of business succession planning to the owner–manager is one of the determinants of the extent of succession planning in any MSM-FOBE. The importance of six succession planning issues to owner–managers is compared on the number of the managerial-role employees in their MSM-FOBEs. The study reveals higher importance of five succession issues to owner–managers of larger MSM-FOBEs that is, those with higher number of managerial-role employees. The lower importance of most succession planning issues among owner–managers of small Indian MSM-FOBEs (with no managerial-role employees) could be one of the reasons for their higher vulnerability to business succession.

Impact of Entrepreneurship Education on Entrepreneurial Intentions of Potential Entrepreneurs in India

Deepali; Sudhir K. Jain; Harish Chaudhary

This study explores the impact of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions of potential entrepreneurs in India. To this end, a government-sponsored skill and development programme has been critically examined in the study. It is envisaged that such programmes would advance entrepreneurial intentions among potential entrepreneurs. In order to determine the impact of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions, 164 students were sampled and the data were collected from two groups formed from the sample: one which had received a 6-month formal entrepreneurship education and the other which did not. A survey technique was used to critically examine the impact of entrepreneurship education on the receiver and non-receiver groups. Findings suggest (1) significant contribution of training and skill development on the receiver group and (2) level of general education that has a negative impact on entrepreneurial intentions. The study may enable policy makers to formulate entrepreneurship education programmes for potential entrepreneurs who may be unemployed, semi-literate, and underemployed and non-entrepreneurial society.

Open Innovation: A Flexible Practice for Intellectual Property Management in Pharmaceutical Sector

Vinita Krishna; Sudhir K. Jain

The paradigm shift in management from part to whole has led to a complete rethinking of the working system in the organizations today. Coupled with the globalization-led competitiveness, a pressing need for flexibility in management has become imperative. Open Innovation (OI) is one such practice which the organizations today are looking forward to cope with change, respond quickly to threats and opportunities and manage diverse and decentralized operations. OI which allows for the use of internal and external resources both, is being adopted across different organizations amidst diverse challenges to be met. The life sciences sector is catching up with the OI paradigm though the change is gradual due to the challenges in breaking free from the shackles of traditional vertically integrated model. The pharmaceutical firms are grappling to adjust in this environment with administrative, regulatory, legal and management of intellectual property (IP) challenges. With this background, the present chapter aims to explore the flexibility of organizations in adopting and using the open innovation practice with special reference to intellectual property management (IPM). The discussion is centered on the main theme “open innovation as a flexibility exercise in managing the intellectual property with special reference to patents in the pharmaceutical sector”. Based on the secondary data, i.e. varied sources of literature a conceptual discussion on the paradoxical nature and the synergistic effect of open innovation (OI) and intellectual property (IP) is attempted in this chapter. What different connotations/factors of flexibility are exercised in the pharmaceutical organizations to synergize the two processes and what challenges need to be handled in this context, are examined here. The findings of this study, though mainly contextual with partial empirical exercise may add to the conceptual understanding of open innovation and flexibility.

A study of the maintenance of patents by the non-residents in India: insights for strategic management of patents

Vinita Krishna; Sudhir K. Jain

Managing patents is a core issue in the intellectual property management (IPM) of the firms. It entails two important activities: the patenting of new innovations and the renewal of patents. With the research on renewal data gaining momentum, this paper tries to study the renewal of patents in the pharma sector in India. Adopting a unique approach of studying both active and ceased patents of non-resident applicants in India, with the aid of descriptive methods and statistical tools as SPSS following trends, has been found. Business firms are the dominant patentees and single inventorship an emerging trend in India. While renewal patterns are quite applicant category specific, grant period is independent of the applicant category. In case of the patents category (ceased or active), maintenance duration is independent of the number of inventors but effective life of the patents varies with category of patents. The higher propensity to patent and maintenance show linkage with specific technology fields and the portfolio size.

Competitiveness Situation of a Key Segment in Solar Photovoltaic Industry in India: An Exploratory Study

Ashish Sharda; Sudhir K. Jain; Kirankumar S. Momaya

Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) has been the key driver of renewable energy in several countries and India has high potential. The paper attempts to understand the situation related to inverters, a critical sub segment of the balance of systems (BoS). Evaluating competitiveness of Indian players in inverter segment demands first identifying key players and thereafter, assessing availability of data. Research design covering literature review and case study research along with quantitative tools is used. This paper hints at the huge opportunities for catch-up on business and technology factors to lay sound foundations for this important low carbon emerging industry.
