Abstract The accuracy and processing time of 11 commercially available 3D camera systems were tested to evaluate their performance in clinical gait evaluation. The systems tested were Ariel APAS, Dynas 3D/h, Elite Plus, ExpertVision, PEAK5, PRIMAS, Quick MAG, VICON 140, VICON 370, color Video Locus and reflective Video Locus. The 3D locations of markers on both ends of a rigid bar were determined. The distance between these markers was calculated from these data and compared with the true value, which was measured with a slide caliper prior to the measurement. For the estimation of noise, 3D coordinates of the markers were measured while the same rigid bar was placed on the floor, and the standard deviations were calculated. The processing time for calculating 3D coordinates from data obtained during normal gait was measured.

Accuracy and processing time of commercially available 3D camera systems for clinical gait measurement were measured. Tested systems were: Quick MAG, Video Locus, Peak 5, Ariel, Vicon 370, Elite, Kinemetrix 3D, and Optotrack 3020. For the accuracy measurements, the positions of markers on both ends of a rigid bar were measured and the distance of these markers was calculated and compared to the true value. For the processing time, the time for calculating 3D coordinates from data obtained during normal gait was measured. These values will be useful for intending purchasers of 3D camera systems.

Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are categorized four ways with respect to their shape: posterior spring, anterior spring, side-stay and spiral. In this article the flexibility of these types of AFOs fitted to the limb is measured using a muscle training machine. A comparison of the flexibility of different types of AFOs is made.

Quantification of the effect of the mechanical property of ankle-foot orthoses on hemiplegic gait

Sumiko Yamamoto; Shinji Miyazaki; Toshio Kubota

Abstract An experimental ankle-foot orthosis of which the flexibility and the initial angle of the ankle joint can be changed arbitrarily was made to assess the effect of mechanical property of ankle-foot orthoses on the hemiplegic gait. Gait of 15 hemiplegic patients was measured continuously using the experimental ankle-foot orthosis, and the data were analysed statistically. Results showed that assistive dorsiflexion moment adequate to the individual patients disability at the time of the initial foot contact improves the gait of the hemiplegic patient throughout the whole gait cycle.

Development of a New Ankle-foot Orthosis with Dorsiflexion Assist, Part 1: Desirable Characteristics of Ankle-foot Orthoses for Hemiplegic Patients

Sumiko Yamamoto; Masahiko Ebina; Shinji Miyazaki; Hideo Kawai; Toshio Kubota

ABSTRACTThe mechanical characteristics of ankle-foot orthoses that are important for hemiplegic gait are the magnitude of the assist moment and the initial ankle angle. An experimental ankle-foot orthosis that allows for easy adjustment of the magnitude of the assist moments and the initial ankle an
