Guided transmission of oxygen ions through Al2O3 nanocapillaries

The transmissions of oxygen ions through Al2O3 nanocapillaries each 50 nm in diameter and 10 μm in length at a series of different tilt angles are measured, where the ions with energies ranging from 10 to 60 keV and charge states from 1 up to 6 are involved. The angular distribution and the transmission yields of transported ions are investigated. Our results indicate both the existence of a guiding effect when ions pass through the capillary and a significant dependence of the ion transmission on the energy and the charge state of the ions. The guiding effects are observed to be enhanced at lower projectile energies and higher charge states. Meanwhile, the results also exhibit that the transmission yields increase as the tilt angle decreases at a given energy and charge state.

Guiding of 150 keV O6+ ions through nanocapillaries in an uncoated Al2O3 membrane: special time dependence of the transmission profile width

This paper reports that the transmission of O6+ ions with energy of 150keV through capillaries in an uncoated Al2O3 membrane was measured, and agreements with previously reported results in general angular distribution of the transmitted ions and the transmission fractions as a function of the tilt angle well fitted to Gaussian-like functions were observed. Due to using an uncoated capillary membrane, our c is larger than that using a gold-coated one with a smaller value of E-p/q, which suggests a larger equilibrium charge Q(infinity) in our experiment. The observed special width variation with time and a larger width than that using a smaller E-p/q were qualitatively explained by using mean-field classical transport theory based on a classical-trajectory Monte Carlo simulation.

Transfer Ionization of Helium in Collisions with Cq+ and Oq+ (q = 1–3)

Cross-section ratios sigma(TI)/sigma(SC) of transfer ionization (TI) to single capture (SC) of Cq+- and Oq+-He (q = 1 - 3) collisions in the energy range of 15-440 keV/u (0.8-4.2 v(Bohr)) are experimentally determined. It is shown that sigma(TI)/sigma(SC) strongly depends on the projectile velocity, and there is a maximum for E(keV/u)/q(1/2) approximate to 150. Combining the Bohr-Lindhard model and the statistical model, a theoretical estimate is presented, in reasonable agreement with the experimental data when E(keV/u)/q(1/2) > 35.

Interaction of 18-keV O{sup -} ions with Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} nanocapillaries

The transmission of 18-keV O- ions through Al2O3 nanocapillaries with 50 nm in diameter and 12 mu m in length is studied in this work. By measuring angular distribution of transmitted particles when capillaries were tilted with respect to incident ion beam, two peaks were observed. It is distinguished that one of them is composed by direct transmitted ions and another one is composed by scattered ions. A phenomenon referred to as guiding effect, as found for highly charged ions and low-energy electrons, was observed. When negative ions (18-keV O-) are transmitted through nanocapillaries, most of them were ionized to neutral atoms and even positive ions. The intensity of transmitted particles (O-, O-0, and O+) decreased when the tilt angle increased. In transmitted particles, the fraction of O- declined but that of O-0 and O+ ions grew when the tilt angle grew. Guiding of 60 keV O6+ Ions through Nanocapillaries in an Uncoated Al2O3 Membrane

We measure the transmission of O6+ ions with a higher energy of 60keV (in turn a higher value of Ep/q) through capillaries in an uncoated Al2O3 membrane, and obtain agreements with previously reported results in general angular distribution of the transmitted ions and the transmission profile width variation with capillary tilt angle. The transmission fractions as a function of the tilt angle can be fitted to the semi-empirical Gaussian-like function well. Due to using uncoated capillary membrane, our Ψc is larger than that using gold-coated one, in spite of our larger value of Ep/q, which suggests a larger equilibrium charge Q∞ in our experiment.

Single-and-double electron loss of O2+ in collisions with argon and helium

This paper reports that the ratios of double to single electron loss cross-section (R) of O2+ in collision with Ar and He at the velocity of 1–4ν0 (ν0 is the Bohr velocity) have been obtained by the coincidence technique. The trend of R – V in the experiment indicates that the effective charge varies with injected velocity. The effective charge can be obtained by the n-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method, which is interpreted by the molecular Coulomb over barrier model.

Double Electron Processes in Collisions of Partially Stripped Ions Cq+(q = 1−4) with Helium

The multi-electron processes are investigated for 17.9–120 keV/u C1+, 30–323 keV/u C2+, 120–438 keV/u C3+, 287–480 keV/u C4+ incident on a helium target. The cross-section ratios of double electron (DE) process to the total of the single electron (SE) and the double electron process (i.e. SE+DE), the direct double electron (DDI) to the direct single ionization (DSI) as well as the contributions of DDI to DE and of TI to DE are measured using coincidence techniques. The energy and charge state dependences of the measured cross-section ratios are studied and discussed.

Investigation of transfer ionization in collisions of partially stripped carbon ions with helium at low to intermediate velocities

The ratios of transfer ionization (TI) to single-electron capture (SC) cross sections have been measured for the collisions of partially stripped Cq+ ions (q = 1-4) with He. The collision velocity ranges from 0.7 to 4.4v(0) (v(0) is the Bohr velocity). The projectile-ion and recoil-ion coincidence technique is used to separate the processes of TI and SC. The ratios reach the maximum when the velocity is about 3.7 v(0). This can be explained qualitatively based on the two-step mechanism. The experimental results are also compared with the results calculated using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The CTMC results are in agreement with the experimental data basically. The discrepancies in higher velocity region are interpreted by the effective charge effect.

Multiple ionization of argon accompanied by electron loss and capture of 0.22-6.35 MeV C q+ ions

In this paper a projectile ions-recoil ions coincidence technique is employed to investigate the target ionization and projectile charge state changing processes in the collision of 0.22–6.35 MeV Cq+ (q = 1 – 4) ions with argon atoms. The partial cross section ratios of the double, triple, quadruplicate ionization to the single ionization (or the single capture) of argon associated with single electron loss (or single electron capture) by the projectile are measured and compared with the previous experimental results. In the present experiment, it is observed that the ratios of ionization cross sections R associated with single loss and single capture depend strongly on the projectile charge state and vary significantly with different reaction channels as impact energy increases. In addition, this paper gets empirical scaling laws for the ionization cross section ratios R corresponding to the projectile single loss and finds that the ratios of the double ionization to the single ionization associated with single electron capture remain constant in the present energy range.
