Evaluation of Fatigue Life and Structural Analysis for Dish-Type and Spoke-Type Automobile Wheels

Sung-Soo Kang; Jong Hwa Lee

Prior to the experimental and production stages of goods, the strengths should be evaluated in the design stage. The introduction of commercial codes at the design stage gives benefits such as cost and time economies in the production and strength evaluation. In this study, structural analysis and fatigue analysis are carried out using ANSYS modeling of the 3D geometry of the wheel. In a comparison of dish-type and spoke-type wheels, it is shown that the deformation and maximum equivalent stress for the dish-type wheels are lower than those for spoke-type wheels. Nevertheless, spoke-type wheels are often used because they are light and have exhibit excellent cooling performance. Furthermore, according to the results of life analysis, aluminum wheels show improved resistance to fatigue compared to steel wheels.

Numerical Modeling of the Transformation Temperature Effect on the Relaxation of Welding Residual Stress

Gyoung-Bok Jang; Sung-Soo Kang

Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials have martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. It is well known that volume expansion due to the phase transformation could influence on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is necessary to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. For this purpose, the analysis is carried out in two regions, i.e., heating and cooling, because the variation of material properties following a phase transformation in cooling is different in comparison with the case in heating, even at the same temperature. The variation of material properties following phase transformation is considered by the adjustment of specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient, and the distribution of residual stress in analysis is compared with that of experiment by previous study. In this study, simplified numerical procedures considering phase transformation, which based on a commercial finite element package was established through comparing with the experimental data of residual stress distribution by other researcher. To consider the phase transformation effect on residual stress relaxation, the transition of mechanical and thermal property such as thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat capacity was found by try and error method in this analysis. In addition to, since the transformation temperature changes by the kind and control of alloying elements, the steel with many kinds of transformation temperature were selected and the effect of transformation on stress releasement was investigated by the numerical procedures considering phase transformation.

Structural Analysis of the Lower Frame in the Multi-aerial Platform

Sung-Soo Kang

ABSTRACTThis research focuses on structural stability of the multi-aerial platform. In this study, we conduct structural analysis for the lower structures such as sub frame, out-trigger and chassis frame, by using a universal structural analysis program NASTRAN based on 3D CAD data, material properties, load conditions and boundary conditions. We confirm the position of local stress exceeding the yield strength, through structural analysis of 4 cases for load conditions. As the results, it is possible to relax stress concentration in a way such as changing the thickness, reinforcing the material of the lower frames.

Estimation of Hardness and Compressive Strength of SP-100 Aluminum Powder Epoxy

Jeong-Young Han; Myung-Hun Kim; Sung-Soo Kang

In this study, we performed experimental tests on five SP-100 aluminum powder epoxy specimens with several after-curing conditions in order to estimate their hardness with temperature and compressive strength. In the surface hardness test, it was found that the higher the after-curing temperature, the higher was the hardness. In particular, it was found that the hardness of the specimens in cases 3 and 4 was much higher than in the other cases. In addition, in the compression tests carried out to evaluate the compressive strength, it was found that the specimens showed relatively similar stiffness and strength with after-curing, and specimens with no after-curing showed compression stress-strain curves similar to those of thermoplastic resins.
