Teaching And Learning Of E-Commerce Courses Via Hybrid E-Learning Model In Unitar

Mohamad Taha Ijab; Rina Anwar; Suraya Hamid

The advent of the Internet in the early 1980s did not attract e-learning instantaneously. Circa 1990s only, universities started looking for the potential of the Internet to deliver teaching and learning to the masses. Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), being the first e-learning university in Malaysia, offers a hybrid model that combines three important components. The three components are the interactive, multimedia content on CDs and on the Web, the face-to-face meetings, and the Internet-based support systems that provide continuous interaction between the students and faculty. This paper describes our experience at UNITAR in designing and teaching Electronic-Commerce (EC) courses using the mentioned hybrid e-learning concept. EC courses in UNITAR were offered for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The curriculum of these courses was developed and modeled after the EC Framework introduced by Ravi Kalakota and Andrew B. Whinston. Our hybrid e-learning model combines the face-to-face meetings of lecturers and students, and also the use of a Web-based Learning Management System (LMS) that enables continuous interactions via an Virtual Online Instructional Support System (VOISS), Centra as the Online Tutorial (OLT) media, and the multimedia-enabled Web-based courseware.

Purpose The explosion of social media use such as Facebook among higher education students is deemed to have great potential in widely disseminating environmental sustainability awareness. The paper aims to capture, summarise, synthesise and comment on the role of social media to garner interest of students and staff on environmental sustainability issues. Design/methodology/approach Systematic literature review technique is adopted, and three selected online databases were searched for relevant papers for review. Specific data were extracted from each paper, and the discussion section was based on the developed research questions. Findings Higher education needs to fully leverage the ubiquity of social media to extend how environmental sustainability is viewed by the students and staff. Sustainability practices conducted at the university level such as recycling, reduction of electricity and water consumptions and paper reduction in classroom and used to engage students on environmental matters. For staff, social media can be leveraged as to convey the university policy and assist in their quest to become full-fledged green universities. Research limitations/implications Some of the limitations of this research include the lack of keyword search using synonyms or related terms equivalent to the term “awareness”, lack of forward and backward searches, and the papers were searched until end of 2013 only. Future research needs to take advantage of the current limitations to investigate this topic and be empirically supported by theories using quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method-based research. Future studies could also develop relevant frameworks to propose an effective use of social media for creating environmental sustainability awareness in higher education. Practical implications Propagations of environmental sustainability awareness in higher education would be more effective with the use of social media. Social implications In principle, the increase of environmental awareness level would increase the students’ good behavioural conduct on environmental sustainability. Originality/value While the broad topic of environmental sustainability in higher education is widely discussed, the role of social media in shaping environmental sustainability awareness is still under researched. This situation provides a significant potential for exploration by sustainability researchers to craft their investigation on the effective role of social media in creating environmental awareness in higher education.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the information-seeking behaviour of international students in terms of their information needs and to highlight the role of social media.,In this paper, a systematic literature survey was conducted in order to investigate information-seeking trends among international students while using social media. As a result, an exhaustive systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out in order to investigate social media as a source for the observation of the behaviours of international students. For this purpose, 71 articles were selected from various well-known sources after an intensive SLR process of searching, filtering and enforcing the inclusion and exclusion criteria.,As an outcome of this study, the information-seeking behaviour of international students was highlighted with respect to social media as a source of information. In addition, this research identifies the information needs of the international students and categorizes them by the roles played by the social media in fulfilling the information needs.,A comparative study that highlighted the dearth of studies which merge the social media and information-seeking behaviour of international students as well as identify the future direction for the researchers and for benefits of international students.,A detail SLR which highlights the need of shifting the information seeking behaviour from libraries to social media in regard to the new environment for international students.

An Efficient Soft Set-Based Approach for Conflict Analysis

Edi Sutoyo; Mungad Mungad; Suraya Hamid; Tutut Herawan

Conflict analysis has been used as an important tool in economic, business, governmental and political dispute, games, management negotiations, military operations and etc. There are many mathematical formal models have been proposed to handle conflict situations and one of the most popular is rough set theory. With the ability to handle vagueness from the conflict data set, rough set theory has been successfully used. However, computational time is still an issue when determining the certainty, coverage, and strength of conflict situations. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to handle conflict situations, based on some ideas using soft set theory. The novelty of the proposed approach is that, unlike in rough set theory that uses decision rules, it is based on the concept of co-occurrence of parameters in soft set theory. We illustrate the proposed approach by means of a tutorial example of voting analysis in conflict situations. Furthermore, we elaborate the proposed approach on real world dataset of political conflict in Indonesian Parliament. We show that, the proposed approach achieves lower computational time as compared to rough set theory of up to 3.9%.

Accuracy evaluation of methods and techniques in Web-based question answering systems: a survey

Asad Ali Shah; Sri Devi Ravana; Suraya Hamid; Maizatul Akmar Ismail

AbstractQuestion answering (QA) systems answer the queries of users efficiently in the least amount of time. A researcher has to decide which among various methods and techniques available will be used to retrieve accurate answers when developing a QA system. This step creates an overhead before making a selection. The study highlights the methods and techniques that perform well in terms of the accuracy of answers provided. Nine Web-based question answering systems were consulted, and the applied methods and techniques evaluated on the basis of the percentage of questions correctly answered and the mean reciprocal rank evaluation measures. Results were discussed using three key stages involved in a QA system: answer extraction, scoring of answers, and answer aggregation. Results show some techniques have higher accuracy of answers than others. Not all methods in QA systems can improve the accuracy of answers individually, but the methods used in combination obtain greater effect. The results can be used to select methods and techniques optimal for producing highly accurate scores without spending time on benchmarking.

Towards Big Data Quality Framework for Malaysia’s Public Sector Open Data Initiative

Mohamad Taha Ijab; Azlina Ahmad; Rabiah Abdul Kadir; Suraya Hamid

This paper is about the conceptual development of the Big Data Quality Framework for Malaysia’s Public Sector Open Data Initiative (My-PSODI). At the moment, there is a lack of Big Data Quality Framework in existence particularly that is focusing on the specific context and needs of Malaysia’s Public Sector Open Data initiative. Most of existing data quality frameworks are catering the needs of traditional data types (i.e., structured data) and are very generic in nature. Due to the explosion of big data which consists mostly of unstructured data and structured data, and Malaysia’s vision of leveraging data in modernizing its service delivery, a new framework addressing the needs of Big Data for Malaysia is needed. Based on an extensive literature review, we develop a conceptual framework and systematic methodologies of how to construct the said framework to its fruition.

Analysis of Learning Analytics in Higher Educational Institutions: A Review

Sarraf Rajesh Kumar; Suraya Hamid

Learning analytics is relatively new in the field of research models, assessment/evaluation, and business intelligence. The critical analysis of literature explains that, as a consequence of more and better data, learning analytics gained significant attention in education. This paper emphasized integration of three major components: educational data mining, learning analytics, and academic analytics. It gives the comprehensive background for increasing understanding of the positive aspects of implementing the framework of learning analytics (LA) in higher educational institutions in Malaysia. Besides emphasizing LA, the role of educational data mining (EDM) in adaptive learning is also discussed. It gives an empirical-based overview with the key objectives of adopting the proposed model of LA in generic educational strategic planning by Malaysian HEIs. It examined the literature on experimental case studies, conducted during the last six years (2012–2017) for extracting recently updated information on increasing HEIs performance in Malaysia. The results have highlighted some major directions of LA, EDM, and academic analytics in driving techniques for achieving student retention and enhancing employability.

Suraya Ika Tamrin; Azah Anir Norman; Suraya Hamid

Purpose The purpose of this paper to investigate the current information systems security (ISS) practices of the social software application (SSA) users via the internet. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for a systematic literature review survey on ISS and its practices in SSAs between 2010 and 2015. The study includes a set of 39 papers from among 1,990 retrieved papers published in 35 high-impact journals. The selected papers were filtered using the Publish or Perish software by Harzing and Journal Citation Report (JCR) with an inclusion criterion of least one citation per article. Findings The practice of ISS is driven by the need to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the data from being tampered. It is coherent with the current practice as reported by many researchers in this study. Four important factors lead to the ISS practice in SSA: protection tools offered, ownership, user behaviour, and security policy. Practical implications The paper highlights the implication of successful ISS practices is having clear security purpose and security supported environment (user behaviour and security protection tools) and governance (security policy and ownership) protection tools offered, ownership, user behaviour, and security policy towards ISS practice by the users. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need to study how to enable ISS practice.

Merging the models of information seeking behaviour to generate the generic phases

Sarah Bukhari; Suraya Hamid; Sri Devi Ravana

Information seeking behaviour (ISB) is one of the important concepts of information science, library science and social science to predict human behaviour. However, models of ISB are in a variety of forms and have different components. In addition, every model of ISB targets a specific audience, but all models have the same purpose i.e., to fulfil the desired informational needs. Hence, in order to understand the similarity and difference between each model, it is necessary to know the generic behaviour of ISB models. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to present existing ISB models and generate the generic phases. As a methodology, created the strategy after observing the ISB models i.e., critical review of ISB model, extract the components of ISB, determine the input and output components of ISB, construct table, matching components (ISB), non-matching components (ISB), rearrange all phases and analyse the flow. This strategy helped to merge the models of ISB and placed the similar components (based on the flow and concept) in one phase and different components in different phases. Hence, the significant of this study is to evaluate the generic phases from the combination of ISB models. That helps to differentiate the importance of ISB models components and has rich practical and theoretical implications, which are discussed in the conclusion.
