Abstract New molecular receptors 6, 7 and 8 with diphenyl ether/diphenyl sulphide as spacer having functional groups complementary to long chain dicarboxylic acids have been developed. Binding studies with different dicarboxylic acids showed high association constants with the receptor 6.

In the structure of the title compound, C 24 H 24 O 2 , one of the two types of six-membered rings is planar and the other is in a skew-boat conformation. The ethylene C=C bond distance is 1.345 (3) A. The substituents at the ethylene are in an E configuration. The crystal structure consists of discrete molecules lying about inversion centres, held together by van der Waals contacts.

The title compound, C 24 H 18 O 5 S 2 , possesses crystallographic C2 symmetry. The thienyl ring adopts a planar conformation. The methoxycarbonyl group is twisted 9.7 (1)° out of plane of its parent thienyl ring.

In the title molecule, C 22 H 21 N, one of the two cyclohexane rings shows conformational disorder, with both major and minor conformers in half-chair conformations ; the other cyclohexane ring adopts a conformation intermediate between sofa and half-chair.
