Maple in Mathematics

Suthathip Suanmali

The paper presents the use of Maple as a multimedia tool in classrooms, in particular, in mathematics and related science classes for undergraduate students. Mathematical computations and manipulations can be extensive and tedious for students in solving large and complex problems. We employ interactive Maple sessions in many classrooms such as in calculus, applications of abstract algebra, combinatorial, and linear algebra to solve for solutions in either numeric form or symbolic form. With explanation of the computational process and time saving involved, students find the integration of this technology into regular lectures make a significant improvement in their learning process.

ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CLASS OF A LIE ALGEBRA AND THE CLASSES OF ITS SUBALGEBRAS

Suthathip Suanmali

A classical nilpotency result considers finite p-groups whose proper subgroups all have class bounded by a fixed number n. We consider the analogous property in nilpotent Lie algebras. In particular, we investigate whether this condition puts a bound on the class of the Lie algebra. Some p-group results and proofs carry over directly to the Lie algebra case, some carry over with modified proofs and some fail. For the final of these cases, a certain metabelian Lie algebra is constructed to show a case when the p-groups and Lie algebra cases differ.

An Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach to evaluate factors that influence cross border trade facilitation: A case study of East-West Economic Corridor route

Nitipon Tansakul; Suthathip Suanmali; Veeris Ammarapala

This research proposes a framework to evaluate cross border trade facilitation among East-West Economic Corridor route or EWEC (R-9 Route), which encompasses four ASEAN countries; Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The framework includes the study of factors that may influence trade facilitation along the economic corridor. They were broadly classified as time, cost and complication of overall trading processes. Then, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to measure the influencing weight of each factor. Expert opinions are obtained through the interview of leading logistic experts - entrepreneurs, academic researchers and policy makers. The influencing weights of different factors were determined through the geometric mean of the AHP. It was revealed that the complication of overall trading processes is the most important factor that influences trade facilitation. The results obtained from this investigation helps in identifying appropriate factors and weights for the characteristic of R-9 Route, which can further be utilized in order to evaluate the trade facilitation in each of the four ASEAN countries.

Perception of logistics service provider regarding trade facilitation for cross border transportation: a case study of east-west economic corridor

Nitipon Tansakul; Suthathip Suanmali; Veeris Ammarapala

The aim of this research is to evaluate the trade facilitation on cross border trade along the east-west economic corridor route. This study employs two methods for evaluating the trade performance. First, the different influence factors and their effect on the trade are considered. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is employed to measure the influencing weight of each factor. Expert opinions are obtained through interviews of leading logistic experts: entrepreneurs, academic researchers, and policy makers. Second, trade facilitation surveys are conducted. The interview technique and six-point Likert scale questionnaires were used to gather data from logistics providers and related firms who operate within the R-9 route. The results obtained from this investigation help in identifying appropriate factors and weights for the characteristics of the R-9 route, which can further be utilised to evaluate the trade facilitation in each of the four countries.

Key factors influencing management decisions concerning safety equipment selection

Thanwadee Chinda; Veeris Ammarapala; Suthathip Suanmali

The construction industry involves many hazardous activities that may expose workers to a wide variety of health hazards. Selection of construction safety equipment is crucial in ensuring workers’ safety. This article aims to examine key factors influencing management decisions concerning safety equipment selection, utilizing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). A questionnaire survey is conducted in the construction companies in Bangkok, Thailand. The factor analysis extracts 103 sets of data into six key factors – namely supplier agreements, supplier support, personal, equipment design, safety-related policies and cost value factors – with a total of 20 associated items. The AHP results conclude that the safety-related policies, equipment design and personal factors are the most important factors when selecting construction safety equipment. A construction company can use the study results as a checklist to help assess different safety equipment, and to select the best equipment.

Factors Influencing the Adoption of Using Mobile Banking on a Smartphone: an Empirical Case Study in Bangkok, Thailand

Suthathip Suanmali

Mobile banking is similar to internet banking, where banking application provides all the capabilities of mobile Web banking. The use of such innovative technology has changed the way banking business is conducted; consumers with a smart phone can manage their account anytime and anywhere. Banks typically reduces their operating costs by keeping customers out of the branches. However, there are factors that cause consumers in Thailand to question the acceptance of internet banking on a smart phone. This paper is aimed to explore the factors that influence Thai consumer acceptance of mobile banking on a smart phone. The findings are significant in that confidence, convenience, and security risk. They are key attributes in the adoption of this new trend. This outcome provides useful information for bank management in formulating marketing strategy.

Maintenance budget planning: A case study for rigid pavement maintenance system in Thailand

Suthathip Suanmali; Veeris Ammarapala

The expansion of rigid pavement network under the responsibility of the Department of Rural Roads (DORR) has driven DORR to initiate the development of Rigid Pavement Maintenance System (RPMS). The developed system is aimed to analyze concrete or rigid pavement conditions, select the most appropriate treatment technique, and prioritize importance of the maintenance to be performed on different road sections in order to optimize the DORRs limited maintenance budgets. The system consists of two modules: Pavement Condition Index (PCI) Module and Optimization Module. Deterioration data, obtained from the visual roads survey of pavement conditions, are collected and analyzed using the PCI Module. The Optimization Module allows the DORR to effectively arrange the maintenance for all concrete pavement sections. In addition, the rigid pavement performance criteria and the maintenance budget planning are discussed in this paper.
