Membrane computing is a formal framework of distributed parallel multiset processing. Due to massive parallelism and exponential space some intractable computational problems can be solved by P systems with active membranes in a polynomial number of steps. In this paper we generalize this approach from decisional problems to the computational ones, by providing a solution of a #P-complete problem, namely to compute the permanent of a binary matrix. The implication of this result to the PP complexity class is discussed and compared to known results about NPu2009∪u2009cou2009−u2009 NP.

Many computer algebra systems lack modern user-friendly software environment. Poorly designed interface depreciates rich mathematical ideas implemented in calculation engine. It obstructs extensive usage of such systems because of requiring special knowledge and skills, e.g., in programming, to use them. Another problem of computer algebra systems is multitude of data formats and the implied difficulty in simultaneous usage of different systems. We discuss basics of and requirements to interfaces for computer algebra systems and techniques of their implementation. Modern software engineering approaches permit to provide a toolkit for semi-automated development of software environments for computer algebra systems.

This paper describes membrane computational models parsing affixed Romanian words with prefixes, suffixes, terminations, alterations in the root, and continues previous works on word derivation modeling. An algorithm for Romanian affixes extraction is given, and several models of P systems are proposed.

Statistics show that in cases of natural disasters, catastrophes and accidents about 70 % of affected persons need specific healthcare approach limited in time. Ultrasound diagnostics at the site of disaster is aimed at determining the level of urgency to save lives and to prevent any complications for people at risk. The Emergency-SonaRes system provides help to physicians from emergency crews in determination of adequate diagnosis in proper time for saving lives of patients. It will offer on-the-fly instructions to obtain qualitative images of affected organs and recommendations for victims sorting: to provide medical assistance in the site or after quick evaluation of the patient state to send him immediately to clinic specialized in organ’s pathology or injured organs’ system. Two versions of the system are presented: the first one, which can be used at the accident site, as well as in most departments of medical clinics, involved in emergency care – Critical and Intensive Care Service, Emergency Department, Imaging Department. The second version is recommended for utilization in Emergency Medical Services.

Abstract The objective of this work is to present concrete membrane systems generating non-semilinear sets that are small in the following sense: Attention is paid to such parameters of descriptional complexity as the alphabet size, the number of rules, the total number of inhibitors used, and the maximal rule size. A total of 54 systems is described, depending on the exact goal; the presented systems for the same goal are incomparable.

SonaRes platform is a complex of tools. On its basis a number of informational systems for medical assistance were elaborated. These systems are designed for ultrasound diagnostics in ordinary conditions, in emergency situations and learning. The developed systems and those under development are briefly described.
