Colors as catalysts in enzymatic reactions.

Samina T. Yousuf Azeemi; Syed Mohsin Raza; Masoom Yasinzai

We studied the effects of visible range irradiation (in vitro) on the enzyme solutions (glucose oxidase, cholesterol oxidase + cholesterol esterase and lipase) in order to infer the changes produced in the human body after chromotherapy. The glucose oxidase showed enhanced activity to the color purple (464 nm), while the activity of the other enzymes, cholesterol esterase + cholesterol oxidase and lipase, increased when exposed to dark violet (400 nm). Purple is being used in conventional chromotherapy for diabetes, as supported by the experimental observation in which purple enhanced the activity of enzymes responsible for the oxidation of glucose. Specific wavelengths regulate living processes by acting as catalysts in enzyme activity, while some wavelengths may reduce enzyme activity. The irradiation of specific wavelengths effect enzymatic processes, which as a consequence, accelerated biochemical reactions. This particular frequency when provided to the enzymes (in vitro) lead to changes which may well be occurring in vivo.

Wind resource potentials at Quetta

Yasmin Zahra Jafri; N. Farooqui; A.U. Durrani; Syed Mohsin Raza

Abstract Hourly wind data of Quetta airport (Samungli) for 1984 and 1985 are analysed on the basis of speed frequency curves, diurnal variations and of the speed duration curves. In this paper, we conclude that the speed frequency curves give more reliable information as compared to speed duration curves, from the view-point of the wind energy utility, i.e. the estimation of the average power output. However, wind-tunnel testing is required to observe wind flow over the topography of Quetta and to estimate the longterm wind power. We conclude, in addition that the location of data collection as well as the accuracy of input wind data becomes critical to wind resource assessment; which required computer simulation of wind data over at least a period of 10 years by numerical analysis and mathematical models.

On thermally activated electrical resistivity in metallic glasses

Mushtaq Ahmed Gormani; Syed Mohsin Raza; Naeem Farooqui; M. Ashfaq Ahmed; Tahir Abbas

Abstract Electrical resistivity measurements on Fe90Zr10 alloy (in the temperature range of 273–900 K) show temperature dependent semi-insulating, semi-metallic, metallic and metalloid diffusion transitions, just after the onset of Debye temperature (452 K). The metalloid diffusion transition is accompanied by a temperature dependent curved Arrhenius plot. Estimation of electron concentration, Debye temperature and other parameters of Fe90Zr10 alloy and validity of Fermi wave vector less than Debye wave vector confirms a twelve fold metallic bonding in liquid quenched amorphous (LQA) alloys.

Thermoelectric power studies in liquid quenched amorphous alloys

Abstract Thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements were carried out on six samples of LQA alloys from two different series, namely FeZr and Fe(Co)B, at relatively low temperatures. A profile of the TEP shows a Gaussian trend in our observations for each specimen. The scattering centres are the major contributors to the residual TEP. Ziman theoretical model was used to estimate TEP; it is found that Ziman Theory fails to account for quantitative TEP measurements, at relatively low temperatures (77

A new approach to transport theory of high Tc bismuth-based ceramic superconductors

A new transport theory for high temperature superconductors is propos#ed and supported with extensive calculations. The Cooper-pairs while remaining on a pseudo Fermi surface behave like weak Fermions. When the Cooper-pairs become free they behave as spinless bosons. The polarons and bipolarons are highly localized quantum states with virtually no gap existing in between them and are considered as bosons with nondegenerate spining. The binding energies of Cooper-pairs both in a weak Fermion system and for a spinless boson are calculated.A kind of a semimetallic softening transition is responsible for high temperature superconductivity and is temperature independent. There is no electron–phonon coupling for high temperature superconductors. High temperature ceramic superconductors before the onset of superconductivity are found to be Mott–Hubbard dielectric insulating materials.
