The first experiment in Lambda-hypernuclear spectroscopy using the high precision electron beam at Jefferson laboratory (Jlab) has been carried out. The hypernuclear spectrometer system (HNSS) was used to measure spectra from the {sup 12}C(e, e{prime}K{sup +}){sup 12}{sub {Lambda}}B reaction with sub-1 MeV resolution, the best energy resolution obtained thus far in hypernuclear spectroscopy with magnetic spectrometers. This paper describes the HNSS and the preliminary results for the {sup 12}{sub {Lambda}}B system. The experimental spectrum is consistent with the expected strong spin-flip excitations of unnatural parity states. A program of hypernuclear physics experiments is planned for the future with much higher yield and even better energy resolution.

An experimental technique for single‐Λ spectroscopy of the light and medium‐heavy mass Λ‐hypernuclei developed at the Jlab by the E01‐011 Collaboration has been described. The technique is based on the electroproduction of Λ‐hypernuclei by the (e,e′K+) reaction and newly constructed 2nd generation high resolution large solid angle kaon spectrometer (HKS).

Abstract The result of a feasibility study to measure the Λ polarization in associated K + – Λ electro-production is presented. This measurement was performed in the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The scattered electron was detected in the HMS spectrometer, and the electro-produced kaon and the proton from the Λ → pπ − decay were both detected in the SOS spectrometer. This quantity is very sensitive to the elementary p ( e , e ′ K ) Λ process and gives information on resonance production, and Regge exchange, among others. The result presented was measured at Q 2 =1.50 (GeV/c) 2 and cos θ Kγ CM =14°. The limits of the Λ polarization, with respect to the p γ × p K axis, were found to be −0.21 and +0.89 with a confidence level of 68%. The result is compared to theoretical predictions based on an effective hadronic field Lagrangian model and a Regge framework model.

Abstract The 1 H(e, e′K + )Λ and 1 H(e,e′K + )Σ 0 reactions were studied as a function of the squared four-momentum-transfer, Q 2 , and the virtual photon polarization, e, thus enabling the separation of the longitudinal and transverse parts of the cross section. The existence of a sizable longitudinal component for the 1 H(e,e′K + )Λ reaction seems to be indicated by these data.
