We present an improved measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B-0-->pi(+)pi(-) decays based on a 78 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B-0-->pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from inclusive properties of its decay products. We apply an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points. The fit yields the CP-violating asymmetry amplitudes A(pipi) = +0.77 +/-0.27(stat) +/-0.08(syst) and S-pipi = -1.23+/-0.41(stat) (+0.08)(-0.07)(syst), where the statistical uncertainties are determined from the Monte Carlo pseudoexperiments. We obtain confidence intervals for CP-violating asymmetry parameters A(pipi) and S-pipi based on a frequentist approach. We rule out the CP-conserving case, A(pipi) = S-pipi = 0, at the 99.93% confidence level. We discuss how these results constrain the value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) angle phi(2).

The mapping of the magnetic field of the Belle detectors large superconducting solenoid is described. The mapping was done with the accelerator magnets located inside the Belle solenoid excited to their nominal field values. To cope with geometrical constraints, we developed a novel moving mechanism for the field probes that uses an ultrasonic motor located in the strong magnetic field.

Abstract The Belle spectrometer was designed for studies of B meson decays at an asymmetric e + e − collider operating at the ϒ(4S) resonance. One of its crucial components, a silicon vertex detector (SVD), is placed just outside a cylindrical beryllium beam-pipe. After a year of Belle operation an upgraded version of SVD was installed during the regular summer shut-down. The new SVD follows the same design, with a few important improvements. Rad-soft readout electronics was replaced by rad-tolerant one, allowing for longer lifetime of the detector. A new radiation and temperature monitoring system was developed and implemented. A saw-shaped inner surface was introduced in the beam-pipe to prevent potential synchrotron radiation damage. The upgraded detector started operating successfully in October 2000.

We present a measurement of CP-violation parameters in the b→sqq penguin transitions (q = s,u,d) based on a 78 fb-1 data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energyasymmetric e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in the φKS 0, K+K -KS 0, or η′ KS 0 decay channel, and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. CP violation parameters for each of the three modes are obtained from the asymmetries in the distributions of the proper-time intervals between the two B decays.
