Delayed‐type allergenicity of triforine (Saprol®)

The delayed‐type allergenicity of triforine (Saprol®), 1,4‐bis (2,2,2‐trichloro‐l‐formamidoethyl) piperazine, was studied. In a mass examination of chrysanthemum growers among whom triforine was commonly used, the highest rate of positive patch test reaction was seen to triforine (17%) among the 7 pesticides and chrysanthemum extracts tested. A higher prevalence rate of work‐related skin symptoms was seen in subjects with a positive patch test reaction to triforine (44%) than in those with negative reactions to all allergens tested (15%) (p < 0.05). 12 subjects (67%) with positive patch test reactions to triforine were also positive to dichlorvos (DDVP®), with a high × coefficient (0.65). The grading of guinea pig maximization test to triforine was grade IV (66%), defined as “strong”, Cross‐sensitization between triforine and dichlorvos was also shown. The present results confirm that triforine is capable of including delayed‐type allergy among chrysanthemum growers and of showing cross‐reactivity with dichlorvos.

Quantitative observations on thermal and metabolic responses to cold of workers using vibrating tools

SummaryQuantitative observations on thermal and metabolic responses of 32 patients exposed to moderate cold of vibration hazards due to using chain saw were performed. In this study, many cases showed trends of both in increase of metabolic rate and decrease of mean skin temperatures. The ratio of 60 min mean value of the increase of metabolic rate/decrease of mean skin temperature is 3.5±2.60. Twenty-two patients (68.8%) indicated the value larger than 3. There are many with markedly large increase of metabolic rate in those who affected Raynauds phenomenon. It can be suggested that many of the patients with the vibration hazards indicate an decrease of the cold tolerance to the moderate cold exposure.

Recent trends in bagassosis in Japan.

The only workers presently exposed to bagasse dust in Japan are the employees of sugar refineries and lacquerware factories. A follow up study of six former cases of bagassosis from among the retired employees of a paper board factory, closed since 1973, showed that none of the subjects still had bagassosis. Examinations of 70 employees of a sugar refinery for allergic reactions also showed no case of bagassosis. Seven cases with suspicious shadows of bagassosis on chest radiographs and four cases with positive serum precipitin to stored bagasse were, however, found among those 70 subjects. The results show the disappearance of a past episode of bagassosis and the possibility of a new occurrence of bagassosis among the employees of sugar refineries and lacquerware factories in the near future in Japan.

Related Factors in Outbreak of Health Disturbance from Pesticides in Farmers.

農業従事者の農薬による健康障害の実態とその関与因子を明らかにするために, 南九州地区農業従事者, 男子178名, 女子232名を対象に面接調査を実施した。対象者は同時に多項目検診を受けた。その結果, 農薬による健康障害の経験を訴えた者は, 対象者の30.7%で, 性別には有意差はなかった。経営作目の組合わせ別にみると,「柑橘が主」が最も高率 (72.7%) で, ついで「米+柑橘」,「米+砂糖きび+甘藷」などであった。臨床症状は皮膚かぶれが最も多く (39.7%), 原因農薬としては, ダイホルタン (21.4%), ランネート (12.7%) があげられた。障害の発生は, 年間の農薬散布回数, 1日の散布時間, 農薬取扱い年数と有意な正の相関が認められた。農薬に関する意識調査によれば, 農薬の毒性等に関する知識はあるものの, 実際の安全な使用に関する対策は極めて不備な状態にあった。また, 農薬の効果に懐疑的な者や, 農薬の害に不安を感じている者に障害の発生が高率であった。今回の成績は, 農薬の安全使用に関しては更に効果的な教育が必要であり, 一方, 農薬に頼らない農業のあり方も考究すべきであることを示唆するものと思われた。

A study on the physical work load of farmers and dust conditions in the harvesting process of the chrysanthemums.

鹿児島県下の菊栽培農家を対象に, その収穫期の労働と作業環境を調査し, 作業者の生理的負担の実態を解析し, 作業に伴うアレルゲン曝露とその対策を検討した。菊収穫作業は採花, 選花 (選別), 出荷 (箱詰め, 梱包) の各作業で構成され, 筋的作業負担は強くはない。しかしながら, 丁寧さと注意深さが要求される長時間労働で, 同一作業姿勢が継続され, 静的疲労をきたしやすい作業である。とくに, 選別は背部, 腰部および下腿部に緊張をしいられる作業である。また, 世帯における作業時間や消費エネルギー量の配分は, 女子に比し男子の比重が大きいが, 女子は, 収入生活時間の他に世帯の家事的時間のすべてを担当している。作業場における粉じん中には, 花粉は少なかったが, 菊葉毛茸が多数認められ, その量は作業量に伴って変動し, 作業者の即時型アレルギーの病因として菊葉毛茸の関与が最も大きいものであることが示唆された。粉じんによるアレルギー発症の予防には, 選花室の根本的な衛生工学的対策が必要であるが, 差し当たり, 作業者のマスクの着用が最も効果的である。
