Energy Monitoring System Using Sensor Networks in Residential Houses

Aoi Hashizume; Tadanori Mizuno; Hiroshi Mineno

The energy consumption of consumer electronics has been increasing over the past half century. Due to the growing importance of energy saving, many researches about the energy savings of information and communication technology have been presented. Providing residents with information on their energy use has become a feasible option to promote energy savings in the residential sector. In this paper, a home energy management system, particularly an energy monitoring system using sensor networks, is described. The authors designed and developed a smart power strip sensor network and evaluated its accuracy and energy saving efficiency.

Go Tanaka; Nobuhiko Matsuura; Ken Ohta; Norihiro Ishikawa; Tadanori Mizuno; Hiroshi Mineno

We describe a system that controls various devices such as sensors or home appliances in heterogeneous networks. This system can deal with unified devices by interconnecting them in networks using different communication protocols and integrating them, and it is possible to view sensing data and control home appliances with mobile devices. Moreover, as they all communicate through a Web server, it is possible to achieve a cooperative device service using the Web browsers of mobile devices. We implemented a service where a user set a value for a sensor with his/her Web browser, and when the sensor displayed its value, the Web server automatically controlled a specific appliance.

A Design Method of Derivative State Constrained H 2 Integral Servo Controller for Suppressing under Damping of Oscillatory System.

Noriyuki Komine; Masakatsu Nishigaki; Tadanori Mizuno; Kunihiro Yamada

A design method in this paper concerns the optimal H2 integral servo problems for two-inertia model via the constraints of the derivatives of state variables added to the standard constraints. It is shown in the paper that the derivative state constrained optimal H2 integral servo problems can be reduced to the standard optimal H2 control problem. The main subject of the paper is to derive the derivative the theorem for state constrained H2 integral servo. The effect of our proposed controller with respect to reduce an under damping for two-inertia model system is also verified.

Design technique for enhancing software quality and development suitability

Kunihiro Yamada; Kouji Yoshida; Masanori Kojima; Nobuhiro Kataoka; Tadanori Mizuno

Taking software designing as a technical procedure will greatly contribute to the enhancement of software quality and development efficiency. To take it as a technical procedure means to get some specific processes from specifications by means of design, which also means that it is inevitable in the present technology. When dealing with software, the method of realizing a specific process covers a fairly wide scope compared with hardware, mechanisms and systems, which weakens the relationship between specifications and processes, and it eventually deteriorates the quality and aggravates the development efficiency. Hence, we present a software design technique as a single set of three items for a method of taking it as a technical procedure. This paper covers concise functional partitioning, an assessmentminded software structure and selection of the best technique, which is the most important, and it also describes the reasons for the said items.

Development of a wireless sensor network for visualizing agricultural knowledge

Hiroshi Mineno; Kenji Obata; Takahiro Masui; Keiichi Abe; Tadanori Mizuno

Problems involving agricultural know-how can be addressed using information and communications technology (ICT). For example, ICT can reduce the risk that know-how may be lost due to increasing age of agricultural workers. Also, valuable fruits that require sensitive environmental control can be monitored with ICT. Data collection, collation, and storage will enable us to convert tacit knowledge into formalized algorithms. We developed a remote information sensing system using a dense sensor network in a melon hothouse, in cooperation with the Prefectural Research Institute. Using a web interface enabling access to data and photographs, we expect that farmers will be able to transfer tacit knowledge into formalized information.

This paper demonstrates a new ID card based momentum measurement system for office workers health managements in companies. Our system can measure office workers momentum with a new ID card that implements a microprocessor, sensors and a RFID tag because an amount of momentum has a relation with a health condition and it is an important indicator to prevent chronic diseases. RFID based ID cards are widely used in office buildings to manage a security control and to record working hours. Therefore, companies can install the proposed system by updating software for a RFID reader/writer in entrance gates, doors, etc. The demonstration shows a prototype system for health management system with ID card based measurement devices of momentum.

An Efficient and Highly Available Distributed Data Management System

Nobuhiko Matsuura; Seiji Suzuki; Maki Ohata; Ken Ohta; Hiroshima Inamura; Tadanori Mizuno; Hiroshi Mineno

Because context-aware services, such as those for home and building energy management systems, need many sensors to enable us to understand our surrounding environment, the use of sensors has been increasing all over the world. We can obtain vast amounts of information with these sensors, but they raise one serious problem that is how to collect, store, and analyze data. Although a key-value store (KVS) is a newer way than a traditional relational database (RDB) of constructing database management system, the KVS involves optimized write processing and the RDB involves optimized read processing. In this paper, we propose an efficient and highly available distributed data management system (DDMS) that consists of three components of a PUCC node, stream manager, and data manager. We evaluated the query-processing performance with YCSB and revealed that the performance could be improved by combining the data manager with the stream manager.

Mutually complementary communication protocol based on destination oriented directed acyclic graph

Hisashi Sawada; Hiroshi Kuriyama; Naoki Yusa; Tadanori Mizuno; Hiroshi Mineno

We propose the use of a mutually complementary communication protocol (MCCP) based on destination oriented directed acyclic graph (DODAG) using multi-interface communications. Recently, research on smart home is getting more active because of the public opinion on energy saving or comfortable living. The architecture of smart home includes sensor networks that are important infrastructure to collect environmental information such as temperature, humid, or brightness. The MCCP is suitable for such sensor network because of its feature, interface switching and DODAG routing. In this work, for the performance evaluation of the MCCP, we developed evaluation boards which are connected with both power line communication (PLC) and the IEEE 802.15.4 module. An experimental result shows that the DODAG routing, which we discussed in this paper, is useful for the complicated topology such as PLC/RF integrated network of the MCCP.

Problems involving agricultural know-how can be addressed using information and communication technology (ICT). For example, ICT can be used to reduce the risk of know-how being lost due to the increasing age of agricultural workers. Also, valuable crops that require careful environmental control can be monitored with ICT. Data collection, collation, and storage enable tacit knowledge to be converted into formalized algorithms. This requires various types of data. We developd an infomation sensing system using a dense sensor network for application to melon hothouse, in cooperation with the Japanese Prefectural Research Insitute. By its easy-to-understand web interface farmers will be able to transfer their tacit knowledge into formalized information.

Kenji Obata; Takahiro Masui; Hiroshi Mineno; Tadanori Mizuno

Problems involving agricultural know-how can be addressed with the use of IT. For example, IT can reduce the risk that know-how may be lost due to the increasing age of agricultural workers. Also valuable fruits which require sensitive environmental control can be monitored with IT. Data collection, collation and storage will enable us to convert tacit knowledge into formalized algorithms. We made a remote information sensing system using a sensor board made in cooperation with Renesas Solutions Corporation. Furthermore, we had installed our sensing system in a melon hothouse, in cooperation with the Prefectural Research Institute. We set up an interface enabling access to data and photographs using a browser. Using this interface, we expect that farmers will be able to transfer tacit knowledge into formalized information.
