Supply chain involvement for better product development performance

Taiwen Feng; Dan Wang

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of three types of supply chain involvement (SCI) on three types of new product development (NPD) performance.Design/methodology/approach – To test the research hypotheses, structural equation modeling was conducted using data from 214 Chinese manufacturing companies.Findings – The results reveal that internal involvement is positively associated with customer and supplier involvement. It was also found that three types of SCI influence three types of NPD performance differently. Specifically, internal involvement is important in improving NPD speed, while customer and supplier involvement have significant effects on NPD cost and NPD speed. Moreover, internal and customer involvement enhance market performance indirectly, whereas supplier involvement improves market performance both directly and indirectly.Research limitations/implications – This research examines the relationship between SCI and NPD performance in China. However, the effect...

External involvement and firm performance: is time-to-market of new products a missing link?

Taiwen Feng; Linyan Sun; Amrik S. Sohal; Dan Wang

External involvement in new product development (NPD) has received increasing attention from both academicians and practitioners in recent years. While external involvement has been studied extensively, the academic understanding on how external involvement influences firm performance and the role of time-to-market of new products is still very limited. Drawing on the literature on innovation search and knowledge-based view, we develop a conceptual framework in which external involvement is linked to time-to-market of new products and firm performance. We tested this model using data collected from 176 manufacturing companies in China. The results indicate that both customer and supplier involvement can contribute to the reduction of time-to-market of new products. We also show that time-to-market of new products completely mediates the relationships between two types of external involvement and two dimensions of firm performance. These findings have important implications for research and practice in both the external involvement and the NPD areas.

Effects of suppliers’ trust and commitment on customer involvement

Yi Li; Gang Li; Taiwen Feng

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships among suppliers’ trust and commitment, transaction-specific investment, switching cost, and customer involvement within the context of relational governance mechanism and the social exchange theory. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use survey data from 214 Chinese manufacturing firms and employ the structural equation model to verify the conceptual model. Findings – Relational governance benefits customer involvement. Transaction-specific investment mediates the relationship between trust and commitment of suppliers. Switching costs negatively moderate the relationship between suppliers’ trust and customer involvement, but positively moderate the relationship between suppliers’ commitment and customer involvement. Research limitations/implications – The authors focus on two key elements of relationship, namely, trust and commitment of suppliers, but neglect other relational factors, such as relational norms and interdependenc...

Effects of marketing–manufacturing integration across stages of new product development on performance

Ting Kong; Gang Li; Taiwen Feng; Linyan Sun

Our understanding on the benefits of marketing–manufacturing integration (MMI) across various stages of new product development (NPD) process is limited. Based on the resource-based view of a firm, this study empirically examines the direct and interactive effects of MMI in four stages of NPD process on three dimensions of new product performance. Survey data from 214 completed NPD projects in Chinese manufacturing firms are employed to test the developed hypotheses using hierarchical regression. The results indicate that greater MMI in each stage is, respectively, associated with faster NPD speed. Stronger MMI in business/market opportunity analysis (BMA), technical development (TD) and product testing (PT) stage is, respectively, associated with higher NPD cost efficiency. Higher MMI in BMA and PT stage is, respectively, associated with better market performance. In addition, the interactions of MMI in BMA and TD stages and MMI in PT and product commercialization (PC) stages have positive effects on NPD speed and NPD cost efficiency, while the interaction of MMI in BMA and PC stages has negative effects on NPD speed and NPD cost efficiency. The interaction of MMI in BMA, TD and PC stages is positively related to market performance; surprisingly, the interactions of MMI in BMA, TD and PT stages and MMI in BMA, PT and PC stages are negatively related to market performance. These findings have important implications for research and practice in both the cross-functional integration and NPD areas.

The fit between environmental management systems and organisational learning orientation

Taiwen Feng; Gang Zhao; Kun Su

With the significant increase in the adoption of environmental management systems (EMSs), it is important to evaluate whether EMSs can improve the business value for organisations that adopt them. However, less is known about whether or not EMSs lead to improved firm performance with only few studies evaluating the broad link between an organisation’s environmental strategies and its business performance. Furthermore, previous studies are inconsistent in their findings about the relationship between environmental strategies and firm performance. We attribute this inconsistency to the misfit between environmental strategies and organisational learning orientation which results in operational inefficiency within the firm. This study tries to find out the proper fit pattern between EMSs and organisational learning orientation by investigating their joint effect on firm performance. Based on survey data from 214 Chinese manufacturing companies, we found that the interactions between EMSs and four dimensions of organisational learning orientation have positive impacts on firm performance. Thus, the proper organisational learning orientation for efficiency and effective EMSs is characterised by high levels of commitment to learning, shared vision, open-mindedness and knowledge sharing.

Top management support, inter-organizational relationships and external involvement

Taiwen Feng; Gang Zhao

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of top management support (TMS) and inter-organizational relationships (IORs) on external involvement (EI), and their differences across different ownerships. Design/methodology/approach – To test the research hypotheses, structural equation modeling was conducted using data from 176 Chinese manufacturing firms. Findings – TMS enhances relationship with customers and relationship with suppliers. Relationship with customers increases the degree of customer involvement, while relationship with suppliers increases the degree of supplier involvement. In addition, TMS improves customer involvement while does not improve supplier involvement directly. A further analysis reveals that the relationship between TMS and supplier involvement is partially mediated by relationship with suppliers in Chinese-controlled firms, whereas it is completely mediated by relationship with suppliers in foreign-controlled firms. Moreover, the effect of relationship with ...
