Global memory net offers new innovative access to Tsurumi's old Japanese waka poems and tales, and maps

Takashi Nagatsuka; Ching-chih Chen

This paper describes how Global Memory Net (GMNet) has been able to provide new kind of innovative access to the invaluable content of the classical Japanese ancient poems and maps at Tsurumi University that was not available for public access before. The collaboration began with the development of a prototype collection, based on images included in two publications of the Tsurumi University Library – the Eighty Selections of Waka Poems and Tales from the Classical Japanese Literature and the Japanese Maps in the Old Age. As the project developed, coinciding with the technology development of GMNet in bilingual retrieval as well as with sound presentations, the inclusion of sound files for each of the Waka selection was considered a very desirable feature since Waka poems are generally only readable by very small number of specialists. The paper will present a birds eye view of how Tsurumis rare collection is organized, presented with much enhanced access in GMNetsystem. Through this project, the Tsurumi team has gained considerable important experiences. The overall process for them was very time consuming even though the technology of GMNet was already in place. These valuable experiences will be discussed and shared.

The relation between comments inserted onto digital textbooks by students and grades earned in the course

Akihiro Motoki; Tomoko Harada; Takashi Nagatsuka

When students read textbooks in the classroom, they usually apply active reading. The practice of marking in university textbooks is a familiar one. They scribble comments on the margin, highlight elements, underline words and phrases, and correlate distinct parts to foster critical thinking. While the use of annotations during active reading supports the students themselves, these can also be useful for other readers. Investigations were carried out to evaluate the comments inserted by students onto their digital textbooks and how this relates to their eventual grade earned at the end of course. The results of our study highlight two main factors influencing students; eventual grade, quantity and quality of annotation. Students who wrote a lot of comments and focused upon the more important keywords in the text trend to receive a higher grade. Accordingly, our analysis was based on number and quality of text word selection.

Effect of the number of comments inserted by students during each lecture on their grades in the course

Akihiro Motoki; Tomoko Harada; Takashi Nagatsuka

When students read textbooks in the classroom, they usually apply active reading. Our previous study was to show the relation between the total number of comments inserted by students into their digital textbooks and their grades at the end of course. In this study, the number of comments inserted by students into their digital textbooks during each lecture is highlighted as one of main factors influencing their grades at the end of the course. Students who wrote a lot of comments during each lecture tend to receive a higher grade. Their grades at the end of the course are related to the number of comments inserted during each lecture in the early stages of the course. The finding suggests that if teacher can access information about comments that students wrote into digital textbooks just after each lecture, he may use it for improving students performance at the next lecture.

The Influence of Recent Court Cases Relating to Copyright Changes in Cloud Computing Services in Japan

Takashi Nagatsuka

The utilization of cloud computing is still inadequate and the cloud computing services are believed; to have a huge potential for development in the future in Japan. Here, the scope of the cloud computing services is limited to offer individual users the opportunity of storing copyrighted works on an online platform. The cloud computing services include online platforms for publishing photographs and videos, social networking sites and digital locker services. In Japan, meanwhile, the legality of digital locker services centers mainly on whether a service provider falls within the definition of a principal committing copyright infringement, because there is no general fair use exception in Japanese copyright law. In 2011, the Japanese Supreme Court reversed the decision of a lower court which found no infringement based on the right of making broadcasts transmittable or the right of public transmission. This paper examines the influence of recent court cases relating to the copyright within the scope of changes brought about by cloud computing in Japan.

A Note-Taking Data Sharing System for Improving Student’s Performance

Akihiro Motoki; Takashi Nagatsuka

When students read textbooks in the classroom, they usually apply active reading. In our previous studies, we found that students who wrote a lot of comments into their digital textbooks tended to receive a higher grade at the end of the course, and also the average number of comments per student within a group achieving the same grade during each lecture had a positive relation in most lectures of the course with their grades in the course. These findings suggest that if both teacher and students can access data about comments that students wrote into digital textbooks just after each lecture, they may use it for improving student’s performance at the next lecture in their own way. A note-taking data sharing system which was designed for improving student’s performance furnishes the data about comments to both teacher and students just after each lecture.

A comparison between the database industries in the US and Japan

Takashi Nagatsuka

Advanced information society(3):Internationalization of information in Japan

Takashi Nagatsuka
