Hitoshi Mihara; Takuro Yoshida; Tetsuo Hojo; Masato Urae

This study aims to survey the method of CM education and its curriculum at several British universities (educational institutions) that have established partnerships with British construction organizations such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), analyze and compare them with the construction education curriculum used in Japan’s universities, and identify issues related to introducing the CM method in Japan. The survey took place between August 9 and September 20, 2013 at some British universities and covered topics related to the CM curriculum. Interviews were also held. Based on this information, the education methods used at British universities to train students in the knowledge required to undertake CM tasks in the British construction industry, as well as the contents of those methods, will be summarized. Furthermore, the collaborative education and partnership initiatives with CIOB and RICS will be summarized. Based on the information collected from the survey on the British university curriculum, and the related interviews, the study will make comparisons with the construction education offered at Japanese universities, and discuss how the CM method can take root in Japan, along with other issues.

There are many ways in which internship programs are run. Further study and analysis are required to identify new issues from the standpoints of commitment and mutual understanding among educational institutions and companies, which have recently been found to have differences. This study takes the first step forward in accomplishing this task. In particular, by focusing on the analysis and assessment of the comments portion of the questionnaire, we were able to elucidate new issues and findings. This information allowed us to propose a new training method and its contents. The objective of this study is to, first, clarify the current training of construction supervisors at universities and other educational institutions that offer a degree in architecture in Japan, second, assess the extent to which internship-based training has proliferated among educational institutions and companies such as general contractor and subcontractors that participate in the training by studying the contents and effects of training, third, gauge how such training has improved the image of the construction industry among the youths who have yet to be employed by a company or become an apprentice, and fourth, propose a new internship-based training method and its contents on the basis of the results of the study. The method and contents of the survey are as follows. The subjects of the study comprised representatives of universities offering architecture degrees in Japan, as well as companies such as general contractors and subcontractors accept interns. Referencing “A Survey on the Training of Production Engineers at Construction Sites Focusing on Internships in the Academic Year of 2011 (January 2012 to April 2012),” which targeted college and graduate students who participated in internships during the 2011 academic year, we analyzed and assessed the current state of internships as well as the comments portion of the questionnaire, and conducted interviews.

The objective of this study is to (1) clarify the current training of building work process supervisors (on-site construction supervisors) at universities and other educational institutions that offer a degree in architecture in Japan, (2) assess the extent to which internship-based training has proliferated among educational institutions and companies such as general contractors, subcontractors, contractors, and home builders that participate in the training by studying the contents and effects of training, (3) gauge how such training has improved the image of the construction industry among the youths who have yet to be employed by a company or become an apprentice, and (4) propose a new internship-based training method and its contents on the basis of the results of the study. The present study was conducted as follows. First, we conducted a survey of educational institutions and companies to determine the extent to which internships at educational institutions, general contractors, subcontractors, contractors, and home builders foster skills applicable to construction sites and help companies develop their human resources in the field. Building on the knowledge gained on the current state of internships, we then analyzed mainly the comments portion of the questionnaire, as well as the contents of the interviews. Based on the results, we then proposed a new internship-based training method and its contents.

In Japan, interest in BCP (Business Continuity Plan) rises after the East Japan Great Earthquake Disaster. This shows a new viewpoint for the way of the building. This study considered the relation between the building and BCP and understood the next matters. At first, as for the disaster prevention and the security of the building, there is the problem which should supplement the disaster prevention and the security of the building from the viewpoint of business continuity even if it is at the important position in BCP. In addition, the building supports business continuation but it is targeted for restoration if it gets damage. Furthermore, seeing from BCP, there is room that a new element is introduced for the today’s method of the building planning. These matters remain in the level of the hypothesis at present. However, based on recent suffering experience, there is such significance that is able to capture the orientation of the problem that the building field should work on. In addition, it raises recognition for the importance of disaster prevention and the security still more.

Takuro Yoshida

Local builders are responsible for the housing production in many areas throughout Japan. They are facing a period of change in metropolitan areas due to the development of medium-height/high-rise houses and prefabricated houses and the growth of large-scale housing industries. The importance of the role of local builders who maintain housing lifestyles in the region is fully recognised, but it is undoubtable that problems will remain if the present situation continues. This report includes data concerning research on what business activities the members of local builders are engaged in. Based on this analysis, an explanation is given centred on the business activities of the business owner after discussing the status of business activities of local builders. Investigation took place in 1986, involving 83 builders in Hachioji City, which is located on the western part of Tokyo. Hachioji is within commuting distance of Tokyo being about an hour from the centre of Tokyo and large-scale housing development is being conducted in the peripheral hilly zone and the Tama New Town, etc. Moreover, there is a region that developed from the old textile industry, bordering national road no. 20, which runs through the centre of the city. In the mountainous zone of the northern and western sections of the city remain housing patterns from long ago.
