OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to validate the measurement of low back pain by different psychophysical methods and to compare different methods of pain measurement. METHODS This double-blind, randomized experimental study was realized in Brazil. The sample was 60 patients with low back pain, divided into two groups: group I (methylprednisolone 80 mg + 8 mL of 0.9% saline solution) and group II (methylprednisolone 80 mg + 5 mL of levobupivacaine without epinephrine + 3 mL of 0.9% saline solution), both using 10-mL syringes. The methods were the serial exploration and psychophysical (magnitude estimation, category estimation, and cross-modality matching). RESULTS Pain evaluation was carried out before the block and 30 minutes, 6, 12, and 24 hours after it. After 30 minutes of epidural block, the levobupivacaine group presented more significant reaction of reduction pain than the saline group. The magnitude and line-length scales were evaluated every period of time, showing no significant differences, except in 12 and 24 hours after the first block. The exponential function to every evaluation ranged from 0.87 to 1.00. CONCLUSION This research tries to bring to health care an original method for measuring low back pain. It is noteworthy that in the future, more research is needed to apply this method in clinical and scientific fields.

The evaluation of quality of life (QOL) faced with chronic ischemic pain involves the clients in their subjectivity and multidimensionality. This descriptive study aimed to evaluate the quality of life of clients who presented chronic ischemic pain. A total of 100 clients of hospital institutes participated in the study. The instrument used to assess pain was an 11 point numerical scale, and to assess the quality of life, the World Health Organization Quality of Life-abbreviated questionnaire. The arithmetic mean for chronic pain was 5.59 ± 3.16 points. The means for quality of life were: in the physical domain, 44.75 ± 16.98; in the overall domain, 50.0 ± 22.40; in the environment, 55.06 ± 13.51, in the psychological, 56.21 ± 17.19 and in the social domain, 68.33 ± 21.84. Thus, the physical domain was, among the areas analyzed, the one which presented a greater impact on the quality of life of the clients with chronic ischemic pain.Correspondencia: Fatima Aparecida Emm Faleiros Sousa Universidade de Sao Paulo. OBJECTIVES: to measure the pain intensity, identify the disability and depression levels in people with chronic back pain and to correlate these variables. A cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study was undertaken at the Pain Treatment Clinic of the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto Hospital das Clinicas, between February and June 2012, after receiving approval from the Ethics Committee at the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto College of Nursing. METHOD: sixty subjects with chronic back pain participated. The instruments used were: the 11-point Numerical Category Scale, the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory. To analyze the data, the arithmetic means, standard deviations and Spearmans correlation coefficient were calculated. RESULTS: the findings show that the participants presented high pain, disability and depression levels. The correlation between pain intensity and disability and between pain intensity and depression was positive and weak and, between disability and depression, positive and moderate. CONCLUSION: the study variables showed moderate and weak indices and the mutual correlations were positive.OBJECTIVES: to measure the pain intensity, identify the disability and depression levels in people with chronic back pain and to correlate these variables. The perception of pain is multidimensional, subjective, and unique to each individual and can be influenced by several dimensions of pain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of chronic ischemic pain using the descriptors of pain and to rate the main descriptors of chronic pain to people with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The study was conducted in two hospitals in Brazil and consisted of two phases. In phase I, 100 participants with a diagnosis of PAD and chronic pain evaluated 50 descriptors of pain using the Multidimensional Pain Evaluation Scale by the psychophysical method of category estimation using a numerical scale with 11 points. In phase II, 30 participants judged the 10 first descriptors selected in phase I by the psychophysical method of magnitude estimation. The average intensity of chronic ischemic pain was 5.59 ± 3.16. The descriptors of chronic pain with higher scores obtained by the method of category estimation were unpleasant, followed by disturbing, strong, concern, tiring, boring, terrible, painful, sickening, and uncomfortable. By the method of magnitude estimation, the descriptors of pain showing sensitive, affective, and cognitive dimensions were identified by the descriptors terrible, follow by painful, uncomfortable, concern, tiring, sickening, strong, disturbing, boring, and unpleasant. This study showed that the chronic ischemic pain by PAD is associated with multidimensional components of pain.
