A. Carvalho; C. A. Krug; J. E. T. Mendes; H. Antunes Filho; A. R. Junqueira; J. Aloisio Sobrinho; Tânia Rocha; M. V. Moraes

Supporting Accessibility in Higher Education Information Systems: A 2016 Update

Arsénio Reis; Paulo Martins; Jorge Borges; André Sousa; Tânia Rocha; João Barroso

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have come a long way on the usage of Information Systems (IS) at the several phases of the execution of their business plan. These organizations are very peculiar in the sense that most of the IS technologies have been developed as a consequence of the research work of the HEIs, positioning them as creators and as consumers of IS technologies. In fact, a considerable part of the IS products, currently available for the education sector, was initially created in a HEI as an in-house development. For these reason, the adoption of IS technologies by HEIs has followed two distinct paths: the in-house creation, previously described; and a current market adoption, similarly to most other companies IS adoption.

José Martins; Ramiro Gonçalves; Frederico Branco; Jorge Pereira; Carlos Peixoto; Tânia Rocha

The current urge on using Internet for both social and professional tasks, alongside with the existence of over 80 million European citizens with some sort of disability as led to the need for an accessible Web [1]. Given, the also increasing thrive for searching the web for health related information and the assumption of heath care institutions as the creators of this type of information, a research study was developed in order to evaluate the accessibility levels of the Iberian health care institutions. From this study, that used ACESSWEB as the evaluation platform, it was possible to perceive that none of the evaluated websites was WCAG 2.0 compliant and that, despite the poor results, Spanish websites presented more accessibility concerns than the Portuguese. Hence, the situation is critical and a significant effort must be done in order to allow citizens with disabilities to have access to the much needed health related information.

Tânia Rocha; Maximino Bessa; Luís Magalhães; Luciana Cabral

With this study we intent to better understand how a group with intellectual disabilities interacts with digital content, namely web content, when performing equivalent tasks from their daily school activities, such as: painting, making puzzles, playing games. To accomplish this we observed how a group with intellectual disabilities, without experience using computers, performed universal tasks (selection, manipulation and navigation) when presented with different activities on the Web such as painting, playing games or searching. We aimed at evaluating usability and accessibility and for this we registered the following variables: successful conclusion of activities, type of difficulties found, errors, satisfaction, motivation and autonomy indicators. Participants showed motivation and learning skills when performing all the three universal tasks (selection, manipulation and navigation) which is confirmed by the number of participants that was able to conclude the activities. Concerning errors, it was observed that despite the large number of errors made by the participants, their motivation lead them to complete the tasks. When handling the input devices the participants had a good performance using the computer mouse. On the other hand, they could not use the keyboard alone because of their reading/writing difficulties.

Accessible options for deaf people in e-Learning platforms: technology solutions for sign language translation

Paulo Martins; Henrique Rodrigues; Tânia Rocha; Manuela Francisco; Leonel Morgado

Abstract This paper presents a study on potential technology solutions for enhancing the communication process for deaf people on e-learning platforms through translation of Sign Language (SL). Considering SL in its global scope as a spatial-visual language not limited to gestures or hand/forearm movement, but also to other non-dexterity markers such as facial expressions, it is necessary to ascertain whether the existing technology solutions can be effective options for the SL integration on e-learning platforms. Thus, we aim to present a list of potential technology options for the recognition, translation and presentation of SL (and potential problems) through the analysis of assistive technologies, methods and techniques, and ultimately to contribute for the development of the state of the art and ensure digital inclusion of the deaf people in e-learning platforms. The analysis show that some interesting technology solutions are under research and development to be available for digital platforms in general, but yet some critical challenges must solved and an effective integration of these technologies in e-learning platforms in particular is still missing.

Performing universal tasks using a mini iPad: usability assessment per people with intellectual disabilities

Tânia Rocha; Maximino Bessa; Luciana Cabral

With this study we aim at assessing if a mini iPad device is a usable option for digital interaction to perform selection, manipulation, and insertion tasks by people with intellectual disabilities. This study builds on previous studies where usability was evaluated for universal tasks using the keyboard and a mouse input device [1]. This allowed us to assess the usability of a small mini iPad and compare it with other two input devices, namely keyboards and the mouse. For usability assessment we registered the following variables: successful conclusion of activities, type of difficulties found, errors and satisfaction indicators. The results showed that this group was much motivated to learn how to handle with the iPad, several asked to repeat the task and no one quit any task requested. Despite the number of errors as registered in their interaction, they always knew how to overcome the error and never showed frustration or demotivation. Furthermore, they had a good performance (relation between variables: time to conclude the task, number of errors and difficulties felt) with the mini iPad device, however when compared with the keyboard and mouse, their performance increased.
