Scales with evidence of validity and reliability are important to evaluate child development. In Brazil, there is a lack of standardized instruments to evaluate young children. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). It was translated into Brazilian Portuguese, culturally adapted and tested on 207 children (12-42 months of age). Evidence of convergent validity was obtained from correlations of the Bayley-III with the: Peabody Developmental Motor Scale 2, Leiter International Performance Scale-R, Expressive Vocabulary Assessment List and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Exploratory factor analyses showed a single component explaining 86% of the variance, supported by goodness-of-fit indexes in confirmatory factor analysis. The Bailey-III demonstrated good internal consistency with alpha coefficients greater than or equal to .90 and stability for fine motor scale only. These robust psychometric properties support the use of this tool in future national studies on child development.Escalas com evidencias de validade e precisao sao importantes para avaliacao do desenvolvimento infantil. Este estudo investigou as propriedades psicometricas da Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, terceira edicao (Bayley-III) que foi traduzida, adaptada para o portugues e testada com 207 criancas (12-42 meses). Evidencias de validade convergente foram observadas entre a Bayley-III e: Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2, Escala Internacional de Inteligencia Leiter-R, Lista de Avaliacao de Vocabulario Expressivo e Teste de Vocabulario por Imagens-Peabody. Analise fatorial exploratoria indicou componente que explica 86% da variância, corroborado por bons indices de ajustes na analise fatorial confirmatoria. A Bayley-III apresentou boa consistencia interna com coeficientes alfa a partir de 0,90 e boa estabilidade teste-reteste apenas para a escala motora fina. Estas adequadas propriedades psicometricas podem contribuir para o avanco nas pesquisas em contexto nacional na area de avaliacao do desenvolvimento infantil.Escalas con evidencia de la validez/fiabilidad son importantes para la evaluacion del desarrollo infantil. In the national context, there is a lack of instruments to evaluate Theory of Mind, especially with studies of their psychometric properties. This study aimed to investigate content validity evidence for the Theory of Mind Test for Children TMEC. The development steps, analysis by expert judges and verification of the applicability of the instrument in children aged between 4 and 6 years are described. The TMEC was organized into 4 subtests, following the tasks model described in the literature. Next, 5 judges investigated the clarity of the instructions, the registration form and the score, the level of difficulty of the items and the need for changes. Items highlighted by the judges were reformulated, following the criterion of at least 80% agreement. The applicability of the instrument in a group of six preschool children was verified, which indicated the need to reword a few items for better understanding of the applicator and the child.

The family environment may impact child development. However, investigating the family environment in Brazil can be a challenge due to the lack of appropriate instruments. To systematize the study of family environment the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory (HOME) was developed. The executive functions (EF), important for the control of thinking, behavior and emotion are among the skills affected by variables of the family environment. This study investigated reliability and validity evidences of the Brazilian Early Childhood version of the HOME (EC-HOME). Participants were 63 preschoolers (M=4.41y, SD=0.66), and their respective families. Children were evaluated in EF tasks. Parents responded to an identifi cation and socioeconomic status (SES) questionnaire. Home visits were conducted to apply the EC-HOME, with independent scoring by two evaluators for 20 of them. There was a high interrater agreement and satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha coeffi cient for the total scale. Correlation analysis suggested that the domains of the HOME contain relatively independent contents of the family context. Signifi cant correlations of the HOME domains with SES variables, as well as with children performance in EF tasks, were found. Findings provided some preliminary evidences of validity and reliability of the EC-HOME in a Brazilian sample.

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the best known causes of intellectual disability, and low cognitive functioning is associated with deficits in adaptive and functional behavior. Part of the knowledge regarding cognitive abilities in DS is based on comparisons between verbal and nonverbal tasks. However, difficulties related to language may compromise the assessment of individuals with DS in traditional intelligence tests. The present study aimed to verify the performance of children with DS in the Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised, comparing them to a group of typically developing children, as well as comparing their own performance in different subtests. The participants were thirty children with DS between 3 and 8 years (M = 4.57, SD = 1.40) matched with control group by age, sex and school. The results showed lower scores in the DS group than controls in subtests that assess visual processing and fluid reasoning performance. There were gender differences only in the subtest that evaluated inductive reasoning, with best performance by girls. Intra-group analyses showed greater ease of DS children in tasks of visual synthesis, sequential and inductive reasoning in relation to visual discrimination skills. The results showed that the Leiter-R can be used to carry out non-verbal assessments of various cognitive skills in children with DS, as well as providing understanding of their cognitive profile from performance on different subtests.
