The financial crisis that hit the global market in the middle of 2008 gave way to the sharpest contraction of the European economies sinc e the Great Depression, a crisis that has resulted in widespread job losses and social ha rds ip. Unemployment, especially youth and long term unemployment, is destructively high, and a growing numbers of workers are found among the working poor, and an ev olving awareness of inequality has galvanised policy debates across the globe and Portugal is no exception to this situation. A growing cohort of workers, especially among the young and old, is shouldering the flexibility that employers demand, leading to growing job insecurity and a greater inability of workers to manage their wo king hours and ensure a decent income. In this paper we highlight that policies promoting employment and equality and nondiscrimination must focus on the groups of employee s with the most severe problems in the labour market. One of these groups, among other s, are young people and older ones, since the risks of long-term social exclusion has s trongly increased in Europe for them. Secure jobs, which were once the norm for previous generations in Portugal, have become less easily accessible for today’s youth. At the same time, informal employment among young people remains pervasive and transition t decent work are slow and difficult. With this paper we try to dedicate special attentio n this disadvantage group, because we think that it is both a social emergency and an economic necessity. It is also of core importance to develop Active Lab our Market Policy who has the aim to transfer the use of passive support to active he lp for integration of people in the labour market, like the Youth Guarantee programme t hat Portugal established. The role of the social partners and social dialogue is also critical in this context, as they have a significant part to play in shaping and impr oving working conditions.

Electronic Data Interchange has been around for more than 20 years but it is now on the verge of transition to the new environments of the Networked Society, along with Personal Assistants, the Internet of Things and Ambient Intelligence, all aimed at relations with consumers. The commercial relationships will have to be rethought and reshaped, and Privacy and Data Protection will be at stake. It is the moment to look at the right to be forgotten from a perspective of the B2C commercial relationship.

Ambient Assisted Living provides solutions to the increasing cognitive problems that affect the elderly population. To provide all features possible, Ambient Assisted Living projects require access to personal and private information of their users. Currently, the legal issues arisen in Ambient Assisted Living are a hot topic in the European Union, especially aspects regarding unsupervised data processing and cross-sharing of personal information. In this paper it is presented the iGenda project, which is a Cognitive Assistant inserted in the Ambient Assisted Living area which aims to build safe environments that adapt themselves to one’s individual needs. However, one of the issues is the protection of the data flowing within the system and the protection of user’s fundamental rights. It is also presented the principles and legal guarantees of data protection and transmission, and legal aspects are explained, embracing appropriate solutions to technological features that may be a threat.

Since 1995, with the Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and the Council, the European Union has established minimum rules concerning the protection of personal data. It tried to reach equilibrium between the protection of fundamental rights of the individuals and the demands of security, justice and economy. However, the rapid technological developments experienced since then brought to surface a completely different state of affairs. The aim of this chapter is to appraise the significance of the new legislative path taken by the European Union insofar biometric data is concerned.
