Factors influencig software migration decision: Case studies of Acerlormittal Tubarão and the city government of Serra, Espirito Santo

The objective of this research is to identify the factors that influence the migration of free software to proprietary software, or vice-versa. The theoretical framework was developed in light of the Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DIT) proposed by Rogers (1976, 1995), and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) proposed by Venkatesh, Morris, Davis and Davis (2003). The research was structured in two phases: the first phase was exploratory, characterized by adjustments of the revised theory to fit Brazilian reality and the identification of companies that could be the subject of investigation; and the second phase was qualitative, in which case studies were conducted at ArcelorMittal Tubarao (AMT), a private company that migrated from proprietary software (Unix) to free software (Linux), and the city government of Serra, in Espirito Santo state, a public organization that migrated from free software (OpenOffice) to proprietary (MS Office). The results show that software migration decision takes into account factors that go beyond issues involving technical or cost aspects, such as cultural barriers, user rejection and resistance to change. These results underscore the importance of social aspects, which can play a decisive role in the decision regarding software migration and its successful implementation.

Fatores relevantes no processo de permanência prolongada de discentes nos cursos de graduação presencial: um estudo na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo

A permanencia prolongada no ensino superior e a condicao em que o estudante demanda um tempo maior do que o previsto na matriz curricular para conclusao do curso. Na Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo, 52,2% dos estudantes que deveriam se formar nos semestres de 2007/2 a 2012/1 ficaram retidos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi identificar os fatores associados a retencao nos cursos de graduacao presenciais visando propor acoes institucionais para reduzir o problema. A metodologia consistiu-se em comparar dois grupos de alunos, os retidos e os formados, por meio de um modelo de regressao logistica. Os resultados apontaram 21 fatores intervenientes no processo, dos quais os mais relevantes foram o “coeficiente de rendimento acumulado”, o “numero de reprovacoes”, a “relacao candidato/vaga no vestibular”, a “area do conhecimento do curso”, o “desempenho na segunda etapa do vestibular” e o “trancamento de curso”.

Papel do tutor no combate à evasão na EAD: percepções de profissionais de uma instituição de ensino superior

O estudo objetiva analisar percepcoes sobre o papel da tutoria no enfrentamento da evasao na EaD em percepcoes de profissionais de uma instituicao de ensino superior do Ceara. Para o estudo de campo, a abordagem metodologica utilizada foi o estudo de caso, com suporte em dados obtidos por meio de oito entrevistas semiestruturadas, pesquisa e consultas a documentos organizacionais. A interpretacao dos dados foi efetuada com base na elaboracao das seguintes categorias: Tutor Presencial, Perfil de Tutor; Rotatividade de Tutor; Importância do Tutor; Estrategias; Professor versus Tutor; Assiduidade de Tutores; Construcao de Vinculos. O tutor emerge como o profissional de maior impacto para a garantia de permanencia do aluno, em virtude da sua posicao no sistema de EaD que garante maior contato direto com o estudante.

FREE SOFTWARE: THE SPREAD OF A NEW PARADIGM THROUGH EDUCATION

This study seeks to investigate the diffusion of free software technology in Brazil through educational initiatives. It is about the importance of software in the techno-economic paradigm of the information society, the digital divide, free software as a viable alternative financially and technologically to the development of digital inclusion, the institutional barriers to their distribution and the role of public policy in this process through capacity building initiatives in the society. Two Brazilian experiences are presented in the area of education which are assisting in the dissemination of free software: the project Rede Escolar Livre, of the government of Rio Grande do Sul, and the Telecentros the Prefecture of Sao Paulo. Experiments confirm that free software is a technology that promotes digital inclusion, much more than the model of proprietary software we have today and identify a window of opportunity for the Brazilian software industry.
