Abstract Development of new type Al alloys containing only low activation elements on 14 MeV neutron irradiation is described. The mechanical strength, ductility, and electrical resistivity so as to maintain features as structural materials of large tokamak are the targets of the development. Three kinds of alloys, namely Al-Mg-Bi, Al-Mg-Li and Al-Li-Mg alloys, are chosen. The first one is a modification of commercial Al ° 5083 alloy. Another two alloys are newly developed alloys, expecting a prominent role of Li for strengthening of material and raising of electrical resistivity.

Abstract The first industrial fabrication of a large plate of low-activation Al-4% Mg-1% Li alloy as a candidate material for a fusion device, with a size of 25 mm × 1000 mm × 2000 mm, and characterization of its chemical composition, mechanical properties, electrical resistivity, and weldability are reported. Although the final yield of material, starting from the initial melting of Al and solute elements, is low, namely 135 3000 , the plate had sound structural material properties as expected from previous laboratory experiments.
