Abstract Novel gel-derived silica glass-organic polymer composites containing 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) have been prepared and fabricated in bulk forms for optical sampling. Such inorganic-organic composites exhibit improved mechanical and environmental stability over purely organic materials. Electro-optical DC Kerr measurements on these composites have been carried out. Complementary solid state deuteron NMR studies also provide further insight into the chemical and physical characteristics of these unique materials.

The following timeline summarizes the recent advancements made in the development of gel derived radial GRIN lenses in terms of two characteristic optical properties - the size of index of refraction gradient (An) and the diameter of the GRIN element.

Gradient index optics will play an increasingly important role in applications such as fax machines, photocopiers, fiber optic couplers and cameras. In this paper, we present an overview of various sol-gel methods for making gradient index materials.

Optical quality radial gradient-index (GRIN) glass can be made by first leaching a TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 gel in aqueous sulfuric acid solution, then drying and firing the gel. In this paper, we present details of a study on the reproducible production of GRIN glasses by this sol-gel process. Physical and optical data on the intermediate gels and resulting gradient-index glass will be discussed.

Radial gradient index (GRIN) glass rods can be readily made by sol-gel methods. For the preparation of Ti02-Si02 GRIN glass, a sol-gel technique has been used in which a Ti02- Al203-Si02 gel is leached in acid to obtain a radial composition gradient of titania within the gel.?

The processing of a titania-silica radial gradient index (GRIN) lens is described. Molding, leaching, drying and sintering are all important steps in achieving the desired gradient index (An) and profile shape. Gel composition and leach time are varied to find proper processing conditions.
