Performance of a Protected Wireless Sensor Network in a Fire. Analysis of Fire Spread and Data Transmission

Thierry Antoine-Santoni; Jean François Santucci; Emmanuelle De Gentili; Xavier Silvani; Frédéric Morandini

The paper deals with a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) as a reliable solution for capturing the kinematics of a fire front spreading over a fuel bed. To provide reliable information in fire studies and support fire fighting strategies, a Wireless Sensor Network must be able to perform three sequential actions: 1) sensing thermal data in the open as the gas temperature; 2) detecting a fire i.e., the spatial position of a flame; 3) tracking the fire spread during its spatial and temporal evolution. One of the great challenges in performing fire front tracking with a WSN is to avoid the destruction of motes by the fire. This paper therefore shows the performance of Wireless Sensor Network when the motes are protected with a thermal insulation dedicated to track a fire spreading across vegetative fuels on a field scale. The resulting experimental WSN is then used in series of wildfire experiments performed in the open in vegetation areas ranging in size from 50 to 1,000 m2.

Discrete Event Modeling and Simulation of Wireless Sensor Network Performance

Thierry Antoine-Santoni; Jean-François Santucci; E. de Gentili; Bernadette Costa

The wireless distributed microsensor networks have profited from recent technological advances and it seems essential to precisely understand these systems. Modeling and simulation appear to be an essential aspect of predicting the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) specific behavior under different conditions. We want to provide a new method of modeling, simulation and visualization of WSN using a discrete-event approach. Described by Zeigler in the 1970s, the Discrete Event System Specification is ideal for describing the asynchronous nature of the events occuring in WSN. We have provided a basic model for the analysis of WSN performance, including routing management, energy consumption and relative CPU activity. Our approach uses a detailed definition of node-oriented components and aims to introduce methods of visualizing the network at a different level of abstraction.

Wildfire impact on deterministic deployment of a Wireless Sensor Network by a discrete event simulation

Thierry Antoine-Santoni; Jean François Santucci; E. de Gentili; Bernadette Costa

Detecting and providing evolution informations of the wildfire can be a challenge for Wireless Sensor Networks. The network performance is directly related to the placement of the sensors within the field of interest. In this paper, we address the problem of wireless sensor deployment, for the purpose of following wildfire phenomenon. Based on a discrete event simulation using DEVS formalism, we show that the complexity of the fire position estimation is dependant of network deployement. We test four strategies of deployement and we show the limit of deterministic deployment in simple wildfire scenario.

Active Tracking of Maja Squinado in the Mediterranean Sea with Wireless Acoustic Sensors: Method, Results and Prospectives

Jean-Sebastien Gualtieri; Antoine Aiello; Thierry Antoine-Santoni; Bastien Poggi; Emmanuelle DeGentili

The Sustainable TEchnologies for LittoraL Aquaculture and MArine REsearch (STELLA MARE) platform has as an objective to provide data for the management of the sea in relation with the fishing industry. In this paper, we introduce the first experiment on the active tracking of a crab species, Maja squinado, symbolic of the deregulation of fishing activity. This paper introduces the method used for monitoring Maja squinado and the first collected data on the behavior of this little-known species.

DEVS-WSN : A discrete event approach for Wireless Sensor Network simulation

Thierry Antoine-Santoni; Jean François Santucci; E. de Gentili; Bernadette Costa

Zeigler in the 70 s introduced Discrete Event system Specification (DEVS) formalism. This formalism is able to describe the asynchronous nature of the events occuring in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). In this paper we introduce a DEVS application oriented components for WSN : DEVS- WSN. Based on pyDEVS, it wants to provide a simulation tool based on a discrete event approach. Our model uses a detained definition of all node components and is independent of operating system. DEVS-WSN provides a framework to build quickly and easily a complex Wireless Sensor Network and to analyze several parameters at various levels of abstraction : hardware components, node, network.

The platform STELLA MARE (Sustainable TEchnologies for LittoraL Aquaculture and MArine REsearch) has for objective to bring responses in the management of the sea in relation with the professional fishing. In this paper, we introduce an experiment on the monitoring of Homarus Gammarus. Using a passive tracking methodology using an acoustic wireless sensor network (AWSN), we try to follow some individuals, to define movement. The main objective is to build a lobster path according to the collected signal according a classical localization method to test our tracking method. Using a smoothing method and some resolution algorithms we are able to deduct a behaviour of tagged lobsters in an experimental area. This paper describes our methodology to estimate lobsters position according to data collected by an AWSN. This work represent a first step before the building a lobster model to simulate its behaviour in Corsican Mediterranean conditions.
