We present future use cases from the field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and discuss the imposed requirements on communications systems. The presented use cases show that there exist very strict requirements in terms of data rate, end-to-end latency, and reliability. These requirements cannot be fulfilled by existing technologies. We attempt to emphasize that proper development of beyond 4G solutions will potentially enable a new range of safety and driver assistance services.

We introduce a sensor-aided predictive algorithm for Doppler-shift estimation and compensation in dynamic vehicular environments. The proposed concept uses sensor data to improve adaptation of V2V communication parameters to instantaneous channel states. The obtained results show that the use of vehicles sensor data enables a range of improvements in direct vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

We propose a novel buffering scheme for Internet radio in a mobile environment. Compared to standard Internet radio schemes, the proposed system significantly mitigates audio outages while providing instant channel switching. The core idea is to deploy both a remote buffer on a dedicated server and a local buffer at the client such that the client has random access to the data in the remote buffer. Additionally, two extensions of the basic algorithm are presented: audio recoding reduces the data rate of the content and a handover algorithm mitigates the load of the dedicated server. This work takes into account experimental results from driving tests and extensive simulations. It is shown that the proposed approach outperforms standard Internet radio under given quality-of-service constraints.
