Road freight transportation is a major contributor to carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. Reducing these emissions in transportation route planning requires an understanding of vehicle emission models and their inclusion into the existing optimization methods. This paper provides a review of recent research on green road freight transportation.

The Pollution-Routing Problem (PRP) is a recently introduced extension of the classical Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows which consists of routing a number of vehicles to serve a set of customers, and determining their speed on each route segment so as to minimize a function comprising fuel, emission and driver costs. This paper presents an adaptive large neighborhood search for the PRP. Results of extensive computational experimentation confirm the efficiency of the algorithm.

The bi-objective Pollution-Routing Problem is an extension of the Pollution-Routing Problem (PRP) which consists of routing a number of vehicles to serve a set of customers, and determining their speed on each route segment. The two objective functions pertaining to minimization of fuel consumption and driving time are conflicting and are thus considered separately. This paper presents an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm (ALNS), combined with a speed optimization procedure, to solve the bi-objective PRP. Using the ALNS as the search engine, four a posteriori methods, namely the weighting method, the weighting method with normalization, the epsilon-constraint method and a new hybrid method (HM), are tested using a scalarization of the two objective functions. The HM combines adaptive weighting with the epsilon-constraint method. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, new sets of instances based on real geographic data are generated, and a library of bi-criteria PRP instances is compiled. Results of extensive computational experiments with the four methods are presented and compared with one another by means of the hypervolume and epsilon indicators. The results show that HM is highly effective in finding good-quality non-dominated solutions on PRP instances with 100 nodes.

Freight transport has undesirable effects on the environment. The most prominent of these is greenhouse gas emissions. Intermodal freight transport, where freight is shipped from origin to destination by a sequence of at least two transportation modes, offers the possibility of shifting freight (either partially or in full) from one mode to another in the hope of reducing the greenhouse emissions by appropriately scheduling the services and routing the freight. Traditional planning methods for scheduling services in an intermodal transportation network usually focus on minimizing travel or time-related costs of transport. This article breaks away from such an approach by addressing the issue of incorporating environment-related costs (greenhouse gases, to be specific) into freight transportation planning and proposes an integer program in the form of a linear cost, multicommodity, capacitated network design formulation that minimizes the amount of greenhouse gas emissions of transportation activities. Computational results based on an application of the proposed approach on a real-life rail freight transportation network are presented.

In this paper, we extend the classical multiple traveling salesman problem (mTSP) by imposing a minimal number of nodes that a traveler must visit as a side condition. We consider single and multidepot cases and propose integer linear programming formulations for both, with new bounding and subtour elimination constraints. We show that several variations of the multiple salesman problem can be modeled in a similar manner. Computational analysis shows that the solution of the multidepot mTSP with the proposed formulation is significantly superior to previous approaches.

This paper investigates the problem of designing cellular manufacturing systems with multi-period production planning, dynamic system reconfiguration, operation sequence, duplicate machines, machine capacity and machine procurement. An important aspect of this problem is the introduction of routing flexibility in the system by the formation of alternate contingency process routings in addition to alternate main process routings for all part types. Contingency routings serve as backups so as to effectively address the reality of part process routing disruptions (in the main routings) owing to machine breakdowns and allow the cellular manufacturing system to operate in a continuous manner even in the event of such breakdowns. The paper also provides in-depth discussions on the trade-off between the increased flexibility obtained versus the additional cost to be incurred through the formation of contingency routings for all parts. Some sensitivity analysis is also performed on some of the model parameters. The problem is modelled and solved through a comprehensive mixed integer programming formulation. Computational results presented by solving some numerical examples show that the routing and process flexibilities can be incorporated within the cellular manufacturing system design without significant increase in the system cost.

The generalized vehicle routing problem (GVRP) consists of finding a set of routes for a number of capacitated vehicles on a graph where the vertices are partitioned into clusters with given demands, such that the total cost of travel is minimized and all demands are met. This paper describes and compares four new integer linear programming formulations for the GVRP, two based on multicommodity flow and the other two based on exponential-size sets of inequalities. Branch-and-cut algorithms are proposed for the latter two. Computational results on a large set of instances are presented.

This paper describes two exact algorithms for the joint problem of object placement and request routing in a content distribution network (CDN). A CDN is a technology used to efficiently distribute electronic content throughout an existing Internet Protocol network. The problem consists of replicating content on the proxy servers and routing the requests for the content to a suitable proxy server in a CDN such that the total cost of distribution is minimized. An upper bound on end-to-end object transfer time is also taken into account. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear integer programming formulation which is linearized in three different ways. Two algorithms, one based on Benders decomposition and the other based on Lagrangean relaxation and decomposition, are described for the solution of the problem. Computational experiments are conducted by comparing the proposed linearizations and the two algorithms on randomly generated Internet topologies.

It has been around 30 years since the heterogeneous vehicle routing problem was introduced, and significant progress has since been made on this problem and its variants. The aim of this survey paper is to classify and review the literature on heterogeneous vehicle routing problems. The paper also presents a comparative analysis of the metaheuristic algorithms that have been proposed for these problems.
