Numerical taxonomy of some taxa of the genus Fucus in the Iberian Peninsula

A study of morphological variation patterns in three Iberian Fucus species has been carried out. Data on 36 features from 113 specimens have been studied by numerical methods (PCA, discriminant analysis and ANOVA).

Una Revisión sobre la Biotecnología de las Algas.

En este trabajo se realiza una revision bibliografica sobre la Biotecnologia de las Algas. Esta consiste en el cultivo masivo de las algas en condiciones controladas con objeto de usar posteriormente la biomasa producida. La revision empieza con una breve resena historica y continua describiendo las necesidades del cultivo masivo: inoculo, tecnologia y medios de cultivo. Posteriormente se revisan las condiciones que optimizan los cultivos: radiacion, tiempo de retencion, turbulencia, pH y oxigeno disuelto, carbono, nitrogeno y fosforo e interacciones bioticas. Despues se indican las cifras de produccion masiva y se discuten los metodos dc recoleccion de la biomasa, incluyendo un apartado sobre inmovilizacion de las algas. Tambien se describen los usos a los que se dedican las algas producidas: produccion de sustancias, depuracion de aguas residuales, uso en alimentacion animal y humana, uso como fertilizante. Finalmente, se realiza una breve descripcion de las experiencias realizadas en Biotecnologia de Algas en Espana.

Catálogo de la flora bentónica marina de la Ría Tina Menor y costa de Pechón (Cantabria)

Los muestreos efectuados en la Ria lina Menor y costa de Peehon durante el otono e invmerno de 1995 y la primavera, verano y otono de 1996 han dado como resultado un catalogo de 202 especies (4 Cyanophyceae, 127 Rhodophyceae, 39 Phaeopltvceae. 1 Chlorophyceae, 18 Ulvophyceae, 6 Cladophorophyceae, 6 Bryopsidophyceae, y 1 Magnoliophyta). El numero total de nuevas citas para las costas de Cantabria es de 87.

Current state of seaweed resources in Spain

Commercial seaweeds in Spain are harvested on the north and northwest coasts. They are mainly agarophytes and carrageenophytes (Gelidium spp. and some ‘Irish moss’-like species, respectively), although some Phaeophyceae species (Fucus spp. and Laminaria spp.) are also exploited for alginates. No industrial seaweed cultivation is carried out in Spain at present. Spain’s total commercial seaweed harvest can be estimated at 6,528 ± 2,076 t dry wt year-1. Gelidium spp. are by far the most harvested, attaining 5,135 ± 1,7611 dry wt y-1. To date, Spain’s commercial seaweed harvest is low compared with that of other countries, but data on field standing crops and productivities of commercial taxa suggest that harvesting could be increased greatly.

Gonimophyllum buffhamii Batters (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyceae) from the Iberian Peninsula: description of morphological and reproductive structures

Abstract Gonimophyllum buffhamii, a red algal hemiparasite on Acrosorium ciliolatum and Cryptopleura ramosa (Delesseriaceae), is rare along the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. We describe male gametophytes with spermatangial sori and tetrasporophytic plants for the first time in this area. The species is reported for the first time on A. ciliolatum along the Iberian Peninsula. A comparison is made with the three other species of the genus in order to facilitate their separation.

Mapas de distribución de algas marinas de la Península Ibérica e Islas Baleares. XXIII. Acrosorium, Cryptopleura, Gonimophyllum (Delesseriaceae, Ceramiales, Rhodophyceae)

Se dan a conocer los mapas de distribucion a lo largo de las costas de la Peninsula Iberica e Islas Baleares de las tres especies pertenecientes a la tribu Cryptopleureae: Acrosorium ciliolatum, Cryptopleura ramosa y Gonimophyllum buffhamii.
