Measurement of soil thermal properties by spherical probe

Stanko Milun; Tomislav Kilić; Ozren Bego

The thermal resistivity of the soil surrounding a power cable is a very important factor in evaluating the load-carrying capability of underground cable. This paper presents a method for measurements of soil thermal properties with a spherical probe along the cable installation routes. On the basis of two-port network analysis, equations for the temperature response of the hollow spherical probe are obtained. The paper offers a mathematical model for calculation of the soil thermal parameters, including the related standard deviations, using the least square method. The propagation time of thermal flux is calculated, and it is shown that the transient stage of the spherical probe can be used for measurements in infinite as well as limited samples of soil. Thermal self-capacity and contact thermal resistance between probe and surroundings are taken into the calculations. The realization of the probe with electrical heater and temperature detector, as well as additional measuring devices, is described.

Ring-core flux-gate magnetometer with microprocessor

Tomislav Kilić; Mladen Boršić; Stanko Milun

Abstract In this paper the realisation of a flux-gate magnetometer based on a microprocessor is presented. This magnetometer operates as a closed-loop feedback system which is controlled by the microprocessor. The main part of the magnetometer is a sensor consisting of ferromagnetic core, drive coil and sense coil. Because of many advantages, the ring-core sensor, instead of an open core, is used. The external magnetic field is measured by means of filtering the second harmonic amplitude of the sense coil induced voltage. The amplitude of the second harmonic is filtered by the band-pass so that the analog output signal is accessible. After the A/D conversion of this signal, additional digital filtering using Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is applied and an output signal in digital form is obtained.

Studying Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Split, Croatia

Tomislav Kilić; I. Puljak; Dinko Begusic

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB) of the University of Split was founded in 1960. A nine-semester study programme in electrical engineering has been continuously offered ever since with specialisation in several fields. Since the academic year 2005/2006 a new study programme of electrical engineering and information technology has been introduced fully in accordance with the Bologna Declaration. All three cycles, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral, have been set up. Currently a second year of Bachelor programme students and a first year of Doctoral programme students are attending courses and are participating in all study activities. The prevailing experiences with the implementation of the Bologna Declaration are so far quite positive, and we look forward to completing all cycles.

Sheath Loss Factors Taking Into Account the Proximity Effect for a Cable Line in a Touching Flat Formation

Nikša Kovač; George J. Anders; Tomislav Kilić

This paper presents the development of a correction coefficient for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standard 60287-1-1 formula for the sheath loss factor of the middle cable in a touching flat formation. The solid sheaths are bonded and earthed at both ends of an electrical section. The reason for this correction is to take into account a nonuniform distribution of the losses within each sheath arising from the proximity effect. The coefficient is developed by using the filament method as well as the stochastic optimization algorithm based on differential evolution. The IEC formulae for the sheath loss factors of the outer cables, forming a part of the touching formation, do not need to be modified in order to consider the proximity effect.
