2/spl times/ DVD-ROM drive has been developed under with a rate of 2.76 MB/s, double the speed of regular DVD data transfer, and low data jitter is realized by a high bandwidth equalizer (HBW EQ). A 4 Mbits SDRAM (synchronous D-RAM) is introduced as the buffer memory in order to process for data both the 2/spl times/ speed DVD-ROM and the DVD video player.

A prototype of a high density digital video disc player which employs a variable bit rate system has been developed. It can reproduce high quality video signal with a maximum data rate of 7.5 Mbps for 2 hours. >

A digital audio system for a consumer high-definition (HD) video cassette recorder (VCR) was developed. The HDVCR, called HD video, used half-inch-wide tape. The digital audio system realized a superb audio quality. The digital audio system for HD video is described. The protection of reproduced data against errors in the synchronization signal and the block address was studied. The recording and reproducing characteristics are discussed. >

The recording and reproducing characteristics of the PCM (pulse code modulation) audio signal, reduction of interference to the video signal by the PCM audio signal, and performance against tracking error have been studied on a digital audio system for S-VHS VCR (video cassette recorder). A block error rate of 5*10/sup -4/ is attained without degradation of both video and FM audio signals. Amorphous heads have been used for both video and audio heads and the PCM signal carrier-to-noise ratio of 19 dB in the EP mode has been obtained without degradation of the video signal. It is confirmed that the uncorrectable error rate is under 1 symbol/second even in the case of a tracking error of -20 mu m to 9 mu m in the EP mode. >
