Confinement of light in a polarizable vacuum

Abstract We show that an electrically polarizable vacuum with space-dependent permeability e(r) = μ −1 (r)exp(−αr 2 ) can confine light whose quanta acquire a mass through interaction with this vacuum.

Magneto-electric susceptibility of the vacuum

A magneto-electric medium is one which becomes magnetized when it is placed in an electric field and electrically polarized when placed in a magnetic field. The question of vacuum having such a property is examined in (2+1) and (3+1) QED and expressions for relevant susceptibilities are obtained. It is shown that whereas in (2+1) dimensions such an effect can arise from the Chern-Simons action, in (3+1) dimensions it can arise from the interaction of the electromagnetic field with gravitational fields.

Energy-dependent complex-scale-dimension poles in Coulomb scattering

Without making any reference to angular momentum quantum number l, we show that the Coulomb scattering amplitude has poles in the scale-dimension plane which move with energy.
